EL GÉNERO
1-Some rules about gender
In Spanish, all nouns are either masculine or feminine. This is called their gender. Even words for things have a
gender. Whenever you are using a noun, you need to know whether it is masculine
or feminine as this a ects the form of other words used with it, such as:
• adjectives that describe it
• articles (such as el, la, los, las, un or una) that go before
In spanish nouns can be female or male
La luna El sol
The moon The sun
We have to look at the gender mark
EL LIBRO El libr-o (The book) (o) marca de género masculino (male gender mark)
LA CASA La cas-a (The house) (a) marca de género del femenino (female gender mark)
2-Most of the words are masculine if their endings is -o
1) Masculine

2) Feminine
Most of the words are feminine if their
endings is -a

3-Endings: -n, -r, -l
Also, most of the noun ending with the
letters -n, -r, -l such as,
El Corazón (The heart)
El color (The color)
El pincel (The brush)
Feminine nouns usually end in -dad,
-tad, -ed, -sion, -ción, -dez, -tis, -iz and
some end in -e too.

(Clue: There are always exceptions to the rules for masculine and feminine nouns in Spanish, so always pay
attention to certain clues like the de nite article or inde nite article that precedes the word, or even the
subject pronoun that accompanies the noun. For instance, the article (El) tells us that the noun is masculine
and the article (La) feminine.

Masculine Nouns
Here is a useful list of rules to help you remember which nouns are masculine.
Nouns that end in -o:
• el cielo → sky
• el carro → car
• el plato → plate
Nouns that end in -n, -l, -r, -ón, and -ma:
• el tren → train
• el pastel → dessert
• el motor → motor
• el cartón → carton
• el viaje → trip
• el problema → problem
Days of the week:
• el lunes → Monday
• el jueves → Thursday
• el sábado → Saturday
Numbers:
• El 4 de julio. → The 4th of July.
• El número cinco. → The number ve.
• El 31 de octubre. → The 31st of October.
Cardinal directions:
• el norte → north
• el sur → south
• el oeste → west
