Introduction
A capacitor is an electronic device that stores electrical
energy in an electric field. It has many uses ranging
from filtering static out of radio reception to energy
storage in heart defibrillators.
It consists of two conductors separated by a non-
conductive region. The non-conductive region can
either be a vacuum or an electrical insulator material
known as a dielectric.

When battery terminals are

connected to an initially
uncharged capacitors, equal
amount of positive and negative
charge, +Q and –Q, are separated
into its two plates. The capacitor
remains neutral overall, but we
refer to it as storing a charge Q in
this circumstance.

Energy stored in a capacitor
Energy is the amount of some work against the electro-
static field to charge the capacitor fully. In the capacitor
at initial stage of charging, the charge Q transferred
between the plates from one plate to another plate. This
charge either +Q or –Q is interchanged between two
plates of a capacitor.
After transformation of some charge an electric field is
formed between the plates, in that case we need some
extra work to charge the capacitor fully. This extra
work is called as the energy stored in a capacitor; the
energy is measured in the units of Joules (J).
Now we see the equations for this energy and work.

∫ 𝑑𝑊 = ∫ 𝑉 𝑑𝑄

 𝑑𝑄

∫ 𝑑𝑊 =

After integration of the above equation

𝑊 = 𝑄2

2𝐶

𝑊 = (𝐶𝑉
)2
2𝐶
𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 (𝑊) = 𝐽𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑒𝑠
Finally, we get the energy stored in a capacitor is

Types of capacitors
Film Capacitors
• Film capacitors are also known as polymer film,
plastic film, or film dielectric.
• It is a capacitor that uses a thin plastic film as the
dielectric.
• Film capacitors are made out of
two pieces of plastic film covered
with metallic electrodes, wound
into a cylindrical shaped winding,
with terminals attached, and then
encapsulated. In general, film
capacitors are not polarized, so
the two terminals are
interchangeable.
• Types of film capacitors are - Heavy-duty snubber,
SMD style capacitors, Axial style capacitors and
Radial style capacitors.
• These capacitors are used for shielding the gadgets
from unexpected voltage spikes and for improving
the power factor of the gadget.
• The advantage of film
capacitors is that they are
inexpensive and come with
limitless shelf life.
Ceramic Capacitors
• A ceramic capacitor is a fixed-value capacitor where
the ceramic material acts as the dielectric
• It is constructed of two or more alternating layers of
ceramic and a metal layer acting as the electrodes.
• Ceramic capacitors are developed in very small sizes
and exhibit low maximum rated voltage
• They are said to be non-
polarized, i.e. can be
safely connected to an
AC source.
• Types of ceramic
capacitors are - Ceramic
Disc Capacitors and
Multi-layered Ceramic
Capacitors
• They are mainly used in transmitter stations,
induction furnaces, high voltage laser power supplies
and power circuit breakers.
• Ceramic capacitors are mainly used for high stability
performances and low-loss devices.
• These capacitors are particularly
advantageous as these devices provide
very accurate results, and the
capacitance values of these capacitors
are stable with respect to the applied
voltage, frequency, and temperature.
Electrolytic Capacitors
• Electrolytic capacitors consist of two conductive
plates, one of which is coated with an oxide layer
and separated from the other by an electrolyte-
soaked paper or cloth.
• Electrolytic capacitors are polarized
components. Incorrect polarity connection can
lead to the breakdown of the oxide layer and the
capacitor's failure.
• The performance of electrolytic capacitors can be
affected by temperature variations. Higher
temperatures can accelerate the aging process
and reduce the capacitor's lifespan.
• Types of electrolytic capacitors are – Aluminum and
Tantalum electrolytic capacitors. Both types are
available in polarized and non-polarized variants.
• Commonly used in power
supply circuits to smooth voltage
fluctuations and reduce ripples, in
audio circuits for coupling and
decoupling purposes and in timer
circuits and filter circuits.
• Electrolytic capacitors are
known for their high
capacitance
values compared to other types of capacitors which makes
them suitable for applications requiring the storage of
relatively large amounts of charge.
Uses of Capacitors
Capacitors are devices which store electrical charge.
They are a basic component of electronics and have a
host of various applications such as for energy storage,
for power conditioning, as sensors, for signal
processing and many others.

Capacitors for energy storage

Capacitors play a crucial role in energy storage in
various electronic and electrical systems. They can
store and release electrical energy rapidly compared to
batteries and, hence, are well-suited for applications
that require quick bursts of energy, such as camera
flashes and power supplies for electronic devices.
Capacitors are often used in power supply circuits to
stabilize and smooth out voltage fluctuations as they
absorb excess electrical energy when the voltage is high
and release it when the voltage drops, helping maintain
a relatively constant output. They are also used in
renewable energy systems, where they can store excess
energy generated by sources like solar panels or wind
turbines. Capacitors are often employed in
Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) to provide short-
term backup power. Capacitors are also essential in
pulse power applications, including defibrillators and
electromagnetic forming processes.
Capacitors as Sensors
Capacitors can be utilized as sensors in various
electronic applications, taking advantage of their ability
to respond to changes in capacitance. Capacitive
sensors are commonly employed in proximity and
touch-sensitive applications. Changes in capacitance
occur when an object, like a human finger, comes close
to or touches a capacitive sensor. This technology is
widely used in touchscreens, touchpads, and
proximity detection systems.
Capacitive humidity sensors
rely on the principle that the
dielectric properties of a
material, such as a polymer film, change with humidity
levels. Capacitive pressure sensors measure changes in
capacitance based on the deformation of a capacitive
structure in response to pressure variations and
accelerometers, which detect motion and vibration,
often utilize capacitive sensing.

Capacitors for power conditioning

Capacitors are essential components in power
conditioning circuits, where they play a crucial role in
shaping, stabilizing, and improving the quality of
electrical power. Capacitors are employed in power
factor correction circuits
to improve the power
factor of electrical
systems. Capacitors act
as
effective transient voltage suppressors, protecting
electronic equipment from voltage spikes or surges. In
power conditioning applications, capacitors are
strategically placed to absorb and dissipate transient
energy, safeguarding sensitive components from
potential damage caused by sudden voltage changes.
Capacitors for signal processing
Capacitors play a crucial role in signal processing
circuits by influencing the behavior of signals at
different frequencies. It is important to consider the
capacitor's characteristics, such as capacitance value,
voltage rating, and type (e.g., electrolytic, ceramic,
film), to ensure proper functionality in a given signal
processing circuit. Because capacitors pass AC but
block DC signals (when charged up to the applied DC
voltage), they are often used to separate the AC and DC
components of a signal. This is known as AC coupling.
They can also be used for decoupling, filtering, tuning,
timing, blocking and more.
Utility of the project
Understanding the various types of capacitors and their
specific uses in electronic devices holds immense
practical value. It fosters a deeper comprehension of
how capacitors function, enhancing the overall
understanding of foundational components crucial to
modern technology. Through practical examples and
explanations, this project nurtures the development of
problem-solving skills and encourages hands-on
experimentation, enabling students to apply theoretical
knowledge to real-world scenarios. Ultimately, it equips
aspiring engineers and electronics enthusiasts with the
expertise needed to confidently work with capacitors,
laying the groundwork for future innovations and
discoveries in the field of electronics.
Scope of Improvement
To further enrich the project on capacitors, there is a
scope for enhancing the depth of practical examples,
presenting more visual aids for a clearer illustration of
capacitor structures and functions, and delving into
comparative analyses among different capacitor types.
Including simple experiments or demonstrations for
hands-on learning, integrating interactive elements for
engagement, and incorporating historical insights into
capacitor development can add value. Moreover,
offering practical tips on capacitor usage, storage, and
safety measures would be beneficial. Finally,
establishing a feedback mechanism to invite input and
address queries could actively contribute to refining
and expanding the project content, ensuring a more
comprehensive and engaging resource for students
exploring the world of capacitors.
