Renewable Energy: Solar & Wind Pros and Cons

The document discusses renewable energy sources, specifically solar power and wind energy, explaining how they work and their respective pros and cons. Solar power utilizes photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into electricity, while wind energy harnesses wind turbines to generate power. Both energy sources are environmentally friendly but face challenges such as high upfront costs and dependency on weather conditions.

Topic: A renewable energy source (how it works, pro and

cons)
🌱 Introduction

Today, I’m going to talk about renewable energy.

Renewable energy comes from natural sources that do not run out, such as the
sun, wind, and water. These sources are important because they help reduce
pollution, protect the environment, and provide clean electricity for our daily
lives.

In my presentation, I will focus on 2 main types of renewable energy:

solar power, wind energy, I will explain how each one works, and then talk
about their advantages and disadvantages.

1. Solar Power
 How Solar Power Works
Solar power works by capturing sunlight using solar panels, which are made of
photovoltaic (PV) cells. These cells are designed to produce electricity when
exposed to sunlight.
When sunlight hits the PV cells, it creates an electrical current that can be used
to power homes or buildings. Because sunlight is abundant, many houses and
companies install panels on their roofs to generate clean, renewable electricity.
 Pros of Solar Energy
✅ Renewable and abundant
The sun provides a constant and nearly limitless supply of energy.
✅ Low maintenance
After installation, solar panels need very little upkeep.
✅ Saves money long-term
Although installation costs can be high (£7,000–£11,000 in Britain), solar
panels can reduce electricity bills by up to 64%, making them a worthwhile
investment over time.
✅ Environmentally friendly
Solar energy does not produce air pollution, greenhouse gases, or noise.
 Cons of Solar Energy
❌ High upfront cost
Buying and installing solar panels can be expensive before savings begin.
❌ Weather-dependent
Electricity production depends on the amount of sunlight available, which
changes daily and seasonally.
❌ Requires energy storage
To avoid losing power during cloudy days or at night, homes often need battery
systems, increasing total cost.
2. Wind Energy
 How Wind Energy Works
Wind energy is generated using wind turbines, which convert the wind’s
kinetic energy into electricity.
When the wind blows, it spins the turbine blades. These blades turn a rotor,
which is connected to a generator. The generator then produces electricity that
can be used to power homes, factories, or even entire towns.
Wind turbines can be built on land (onshore) or in the ocean (offshore), making
them a versatile part of renewable energy systems.
 Pros of Wind Energy
✅ Clean and environmentally friendly
Produces little to no direct emissions, making it one of the cleanest renewable
energy sources.
✅ Flexible locations
Wind farms can be built onshore or offshore, giving countries many options for
installation.
✅ Large global capacity
Countries like China, the US, and Germany lead in wind power production.
China holds over one-quarter of the world’s wind power capacity.
The Gansu Province in China has the world’s largest onshore wind farm.
The Alta Wind Energy Centre in California is the second-largest wind farm
globally.
Germany’s Nordsee Offshore Wind Farm powers over 400,000 homes.
 Cons of Wind Energy
❌ Weather-dependent
Wind speed changes daily and seasonally, causing fluctuations in energy output.
❌ Location-dependent
Wind turbines need to be placed in areas with strong and consistent wind, which
limits where they can be built.
❌ Requires energy storage
To avoid electricity shortages on low-wind days, buildings relying on wind
energy usually need backup storage systems such as batteries.

🌱 Conclusion

In conclusion, renewable energy is becoming more and more important for our
[Link] are all provide clean electricity, reduce pollution, and help us rely
less on fossil fuels. Even though none of them are perfect, using renewable
energy is a smart and necessary step for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
