Squirrel Cage vs Wound Rotor Motors

The document discusses two types of asynchronous motors: squirrel cage induction motors and wound rotor asynchronous motors, highlighting their structural differences and maintenance needs. Squirrel cage motors have a simpler, more robust design, while wound rotor motors feature complex windings that allow for speed regulation. The document concludes by emphasizing the importance of understanding induction motors and their differences from synchronous motors.

Wound rotor asynchronous motor

The main difference between the two types lies in the structure of
rotor; to be more precise, in the first type the rotor is
made up of several windings like those of the stator, presents a
more complex and delicate structure (brushes that rub against the
rotor, with the possible interposition of resistors for control of
the startup phase) with the need for periodic maintenance and
elevated overall dimensions, while the second type has
a rotor composed of bars short-circuited, by
which, thanks to greater constructive simplicity, gives rise to a
very simple, robust, and economical type of engine.
The stator coils induce alternating current in the circuit.

This is the rotor that makes the asynchronous generator

different from the synchronous generator. The rotor consists of a certain
number of copper or aluminum bars, connected
electrically by end aluminum rings

Conclusions

Thisworkit was important to do it since

we learned more about the functioning of the
induction motors, their characteristics, their types,
designs that exist according to the NEMA standard.
It was also learned that the difference between the
the induction motor and the synchronous motor is that in the
induction motor the rotor is not a permanent magnet
but it is an electromagnet.
