Parameters to analyze when choosing a simulation tool
The general base facilitates a selection process of the different tools.
of simulation:
● Investigative use: Establish levels to compare the use of the
simulation tools in academic and research areas.
● License type: Define the type of license for the tool (free or
commercial), depending on the type of license, the tool may have
enabled all its functions or a group of them.
● Learning curve: The aim is to catalog the level of demand that
requires the tool to achieve proper management of it.
● Platforms that support them: List the different systems
operating systems in which the tool can run without any issues
(WINDOWS, LINUX, MAC OS, SOLARIS).
● Graphical interface of the tool: define the approach it has
the tool with the user and the facilities it provides regarding its interface.
● Result graphs: take measurements of certain network variables,
in order to analyze the data later and thus, understand the behavior
from the network, in response to different events or possible configurations.
● Level 2 and 3 technology that supports: Some tools do not
they support all protocols of the OSI model, which makes their ...
implementation generating code or adapting pre-existing components.
● Traffic that allows modeling: it allows establishing what type of
applications, services, or protocols the tool is capable of simulating.
● Applications in telecommunications: to know specifically and
resumida el uso de cada herramienta de simulación en el área de telecomunicaciones.
● Competitive advantage: highlight the strong point of each simulator.

What is NetsimTetcos?
Simulation and modeling software for networks and protocols focused on the
Research and development in networks, also used in defense applications.
It is currently commercial and has three versions: Professional, standard, and
academic. According to the official website, the functionalities of the standard licenses
and academic work is limited to research and experimentation in network laboratories,
while the professional license is suitable for commercial clients.
It is characterized by its high usability, due to the functionalities granted.
for its two access interfaces: graphical and other command ones. The NetSim GUI
allow configuring different scenarios, running the event simulation

results obtained in the simulations. On the other hand, your command console of

XML configuration and running discrete event simulations.
These are some contributions of the use of NetSim in the scientific field:
● (Johnson, 1999) shows how NetSim is used to simulate networks

● Sundararajan and Arumugam (2015) used it to simulate a system.
of intrusion detection in a wireless sensor network that uses LEACH as
routing protocol for its operation.
Advantages(+)
+ Supports a wide range of technologies, such as: WiFi, WSN,
OSPF, BGP, TCP, UDP, MANET, WiMAX, GSM, CDMA, Zigbee, LTE and LTE
advanced (Singh et al. 2017).
+ Netsim has a graphical interface that allows designing and modeling.
network environments with a high level of detail.
+ An important element to highlight is the large number of applications.
available in their professional version (cellular networks, Internet of Things,
wireless sensors, personal area, cognitive radio, 5G, vehicles and
military use radio links.
Disadvantages (-)
- compatibility between platforms, as it is only available for
Windows operating systems.
- payment license.

4. In in this part, you will also find a login button:
5. From click and register
6. Then check your email for a link that will take you to the 'Home' interface
"Log in" and "Register". Log in.
7. Enter again to net sim and more tools will appear
Press where it says 'Designer' and accept the terms and conditions
Start to create network simulations

How to use NetSim?
Open a new topology in the lab guide, an example is:
2. Press where it says 'View document', follow the instructions:
3. In The simulator first creates the network components:

4. After configure the command console of each component according to what
it is indicated in the guide:
5. Believe the connections and configure:
