During my internship, I noticed that the company is facing several
problems, the most important of which is the one related to the risks associated with semi-trailers that

incurs a significant loss in money.

In this context, we asked ourselves the following question:

What are the risks associated with semi-trailers and what are the measures?
necessary corrections to reduce risks?

considerable in recent years, following the explosion of globalization

It is defined as a service made available to meet a

of actors involved in the exploitation and management of both ships and
ports.

These services produced having physical and technical characteristics of

Section 2: Intermodal transport units

I - Intermodal transport

Intermodal transport is defined as 'the carriage of goods'

using two or more modes of transport but within the same loading unit or
in the same road vehicle, and without stuffing or stripping off," that is to say, without
to unload the goods from a first container (for example, a container)
to recharge them in another.

II - Intermodal transport units

Intermodal transport units (UTI) are transport equipment designed

to facilitate handling when switching from one mode of transport to another. This
the transport technique is called 'combined transport'.

The UTI are containers, whose external dimensions comply

to European road standards, particularly their width (from 2.44 m to 2.60 m) and
their length (from 3.05 m to 13.80 m).

The types of UTI are mainly differentiated by the height of their faces.
lateral (from 2.15 m to 3.14 m). They are without or with a road bogie, equipped or not
specific handling and securing devices. Their handling methods
can be vertical or horizontal. They are classified into different types:

developed: that of maritime containers. Of a standardized format: 20 or 40 feet, these
boxes have experienced a rapid boom, revolutionizing both the mode of transport but
also the entire logistics chain from the supplier to the end customer. Transport
road, rail, or even air transport are not suitable for making these boxes a unit of
intermodal transport. Once the goods are loaded into the container, they no longer undergo any other
handling until its final recipient. It thereby allows for a reduction in times ofrupture
of chargeand transshipment. Its specific adaptations facilitate the operations of 'placement
in a container" goods (= packing) and unpacking (= unloading)..

b) The risks damaging the trailers:

One must imagine the damages that could be caused by a semi-

overloaded trailer weighing more than 35,000 kg. This may involve property damage to
the equipment itself, whose repairs are becoming increasingly expensive given
the increasing addition of technological options to modern vehicles, or to
transported goods. The most frequent damages are therefore as follows:

The unexpected departure:

The driver is moving his truck during loading because he thinks that
this one is finished. It occurs when the trailer is removed from the dock before the end of
transshipment due to poor signage, communication
insufficient, due to a deficient work organization.

The gradual progress:

inertia of the cart. A phenomenon that can be accentuated by the suspensions
tires of trailers. Skidding also occurs when the cart
elevator brakes sharply inside the trailer during transshipment,
which can lead to the collapse of the lip of the leveling bridge. A vehicle advance
even weak can cause men to fall from the dock, the carts of
handling and the products.
The tipping of the trailer:

The trailer dips when there is too much weight at the front.
the trailer. It also occurs when the trailer tips over on its side while it
resting on its two stands (not hitched to a truck).

Forklift falls:

Even when there are no trucks at the loading dock, the dock is
dangerous. For example, it happens that forklift operators want to back up on a loading dock
unused when maneuvering on the dock. It only takes a poor assessment of
distances, from a late braking for the cart to fall off the platform. A leveling bridge that
staying in a low position is also a source of risk as it creates a break in the plane of
quay.

Conclusion:
In this chapter, we presented maritime transportation, which constitutes the mode of transport

INTRODUCTION :

Competition between ports can only be understood with the concept of the global logistics chain. The players,
shipowners, port service companies and/or shippers, vertical or horizontal integrations, have in
management of global supply chains. However, these chains depend on three competitiveness factors.

The complete range of services it offers has made it one of the most agencies.
performing in the maritime sector in Tunisia. It is equipped with modern infrastructure,
driven by dynamic and experienced teams and connected to foreign countries by
first-rate correspondents.

1) Service Management / Quality :

It consists of ensuring that all actions comply with the requirements of the clients and the
requirements of the international ISO standard by offering them the best conditions of
transport. This service is required to:
Establish the quality management system,
Define the work procedures,
Analyze the processes and monitor non-conformities,
And to energize the groups in solving problems and managing the process.

2) Commercial service:

It energizes the entire shipping company thanks to the significant profits.

that it brings and which are due to better management of business operations and a
Attention continues to satisfy customers (speed, efficiency, and more competitive prices).
the main mission is to ensure a significant volume in import and export and to optimize
the filling of ships.
In this department, important tasks are carried out:
Prospecting new clients through the Yellow Pages, the API (Promotion Agency
the Industry) and contact them to present the service and to know if they are interested
for the services provided by the company during import and export operations.
The receipt of the client’s quotation request

for import and export; a boarding notice will be sent to customers once their
containers onboard the ship.
The billing agent must file the notices in the customer file.
And finally, forward the file to the stamping department.

4) Service exploitation and logistics:

From this service, the operations and logistics manager must ensure the follow-up of
process of maritime transport transaction (full and groupage). This service is

Contact the clients and inform them of the ship's departure date.
Ensure the transmission of docking notifications (MAQ).
Inform the shipowner of the details regarding the merchandise.
Preparation of container parking at the port.

5) Service groupage:
Know the difference between full and grouping.

Complete: means a trailer holds the goods of a single client.

Groupage: means a single trailer is intended for several clients, each client has a
low merchandise volume.

The "grouping" consists of bringing together into a single lot from

multiple shippers or to the address of multiple recipients in order to reduce costs and
optimize the filling. The grouping of goods technique must take into account
of certain necessary elements such as:

The weight of goods

The volume (dimension in m3)
The destination
The nature of the merchandise (flammable or not)
Class of dangerous goods
Type of packaging

6) Service transit :
Ilya two main types of transit:

a) ship transit:
The ship transit manager is called to:
Record the transit details (recipient, goods, number of packages, and weight) on the
SINDA system and print manifests.
The submission of import manifests to the customs offices along with the bill of lading,
The establishment of the UC declaration,
The assignment to customs and the establishment of the BAE.

b) transit groupage:
The groupage transit manager must carry out the following operations:
Record the details of the bill of lading in the SINDA system and print a unit of
charge (UC) or (TD)
Submission of a copy of the bill of lading, cargo manifest to customs
Assignment of the declaration after verification by the customs officer and the establishment
you BAE.
7) Service shipping: (operational service):
It is the most important service and represents the core of any transport company.
maritime since it directly affects its performance. In general, it is about a
assistance between the logistics service and the shipowner's captain.
It should be noted that the shipping team is required to carry out a set of
important and essential tasks to know:

Reservation of a space at the port for loading and unloading

trailers.
Notify the port authorities (OMMP, STAM, police)
Attend the port customs meetings (at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.).

8) Stamping service:

In the case of an import operation, the shipper sends the original bill of lading to their client.
This one presents this document and the deposit check for the containers with
the endorsement of the bank if applicable to the company (representative of the shipowner) against

Chapter 4: Analysis of
trailer traffic of
the company GENMAR

Introduction:
The transportation of heavy goods can be accompanied (trailer and its driver who
are routed) or unaccompanied (without the driver). But the non-
accompanied requires from road carriers a logistical organization that only
companies with international presence or a network of partners
allowing them to take over the trailer at the end of the maritime journey in case of
Genmar.

According to table 3 and figure 2, we observe that the port of La Goulette is the place where

Genmar carries out its shipments by sea with two main shipowners: Grimaldi
lines (boarding and disembarking at the port of La Goulette) and CTN (boarding and
landing at the port of Rades.

The majority of imports and exports are carried out through the shipping company Grimaldi,
following a convention concluded between them, which allows Genmar to benefit from a discount on
the transportation of semi-trailers, a cost quite low compared to the CTN

Grimaldi Lines uses Ro-Pax ships (transporting passengers and vehicles at the same time.

justify the high percentage of damage at the port of La Goulette.

FIGURE 16: CAUSE OF DAMAGE

According to table 4 and figure 3, we observe that theft is the highest cause that
exceeds 2/3, subsequently the cause related to the accidents of the trailers among them is
at a height of 15%.

Accidents between trailers are related to the structure of the port itself, a poor
circulation in the port.

In the end, we observe two equal rates that do not exceed 9%, which are related to the faults of
STAM maneuvers that are not qualified or to the illegals who tear the roofs of
semi-trailers to try to cross country borders.

2) The origins of damages:

At the level of import:

Upon the arrival of the ship, the STAM carrier transports the semi-trailer of the
ship at the port. The semi-trailer will be parked until the arrival of the carrier.
Genmar and the port agent or the client.

At the level of export:

The semi-trailer remains parked at the loading dock waiting.

port as long as the number of docks is not sufficient to accommodate all the
ships.

Furthermore, during export or import, all damages are related to the duration.
waiting for the semi-trailer in the port.

In this context, several factors influence the waiting time of semi-trailers.

in the port. We can mention:

Factors related to the OMMP:

The number of docks is not sufficient to accommodate all the ships, which has led to
the waiting of dozens of ships in Rades and Goulette without being able to unload
or load their cargoes.
Factors related to STAM:
Lack of equipment and repeated breakdowns of materials at the company level

The lack of versatility among workers: this leads to difficulties in loading and

their production and can even cause a stock shortage and thus the stoppage of the chains of

we can cite as an example the strike that took place from July 8 to 10, 2013 which
totally blocked the port of Radès and dealt a severe blow to the local economy, as this port

Customer-related factors:
Sometimes the client himself refuses to accept delivery of his merchandise due to a

In some cases, the customer sends their trailer after the ship's departure time. Here, the

Factors related to Genmar:

Genmar uses a technique of indirect penalty. Indeed, if the client has unpaid invoices, the
the company does not proceed with customs clearance until the client pays his debts
Factors related to the road carrier:
The trailers that Genmar rents from Victoria are poorly equipped and the loaders find
many difficulties during unloading which may extend the duration of stay of the trailers at

Section 2: proposition and recommendation: The measures

necessary corrections
Among the solutions that I was able to gain from my internship are the following:

I- THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE PORT OF DERADÉS:

The port of RADES is often congested and this is due to its inadequate structure. Indeed
its 7 which prove to be insufficient, hence the need to extend the port and add others
wharf in order to respond to an increase in demand and create areas
logistics aimed at facilitating maritime exchanges and thus increasing efficiency
from the port.

Utilize a space for the storage of containers that have stayed for an extended period and also
for trailers waiting to board or unload, this space must
to be secured (either by surveillance cameras, security agents) in order to
minimize the damage.

II-REFORMEDDELASTAM:

In order for the STAM to be effective and efficient, it must acquire new equipment in
increasing its storage and boarding fees, which prompts the customer to retrieve their
merchandise as soon as possible.
Adopt a 24/7 work schedule while ensuring good coordination.
among the workers to stimulate port activity.
Within all activities, we find the human factor that must be placed at the center of our
interests given the importance of its influence on the company's activity, even at the port
the factor is also important, that is why the STAM must provide training to its
employees in order to maximize their returns and their qualifications.
Suddenly, we notice the need for a versatile worker capable of innovating and
to adapt to all situations. That is why we must emphasize management of
human resources, indeed it is necessary to establish clear disciplinary rules in order to
minimize the rate of absenteeism and tardiness and adopt the necessary punitive measures
in order to maximize work efficiency.

The entry of new stevedoring and handling companies in competition

such as improving the quality of its services and its rhythms to ensure the

to capture the maximum market share which could lead the port towards the
perfection and efficiency.

III- THE EASE OF ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES:

Due to their rigidity and time-consuming procedures, the formalities

reasonable.
By facilitating these procedures, importing companies can export the semi-
trailers on schedule, which will help to minimize risks as much as possible.

Conclusion :

From this chapter, we studied the import and export procedure of the
GENMAR company, accompanied by an analysis of the damages that directly affect the
semi-trailers to address the problems caused by poor management in the ports.
Finally, based on this analysis, we have proposed actions and recommendations.
which constitute new future actions of the company to avoid all types of problems related to
the management of semi-trailers to be more competitive in the Tunisian market and
to gain a well-known brand image worldwide.
GENERAL CONCLUSION

In this final year project, we discussed maritime transport and the criteria for
basis for always having a better transportation of goods by trailers.
The theoretical approaches and methods proposed by academic studies have certainly
their validity, however, there are still gaps for the student in terms of life
professional.

Our internship at the company GENMAR allowed us to integrate into life

professional, to familiarize us with practices and the world of work and especially
to enrich and improve our academic knowledge.

In conclusion, we hope that our work will meet expectations.

responsible for the company, as well as that of our supervising professor and that this work
will be useful for the maritime company Genmar.
