Circulatory System Notes
1. Introduction
The circulatory system is responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste
throughout the body. It consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels.
2. Components of the Circulatory System
A. Heart
The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body. It has four chambers:
- Right Atrium: Receives deoxygenated blood.
- Right Ventricle: Pumps deoxygenated blood to lungs.
- Left Atrium: Receives oxygenated blood.
- Left Ventricle: Pumps oxygenated blood to the body.
B. Blood Vessels
- Arteries: Carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart.
- Veins: Carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart.
- Capillaries: Facilitate exchange of gases and nutrients.
C. Blood
- Plasma: Fluid component transporting nutrients.
- RBCs: Contain hemoglobin and transport oxygen.
- WBCs: Fight infections.
- Platelets: Help in blood clotting.
3. Types of Circulation
- Pulmonary Circulation: Between heart and lungs.
- Systemic Circulation: Between heart and body.
- Coronary Circulation: Blood supply to heart muscle.
4. Functions of the Circulatory System
- Transport oxygen and nutrients.
- Remove waste products.
- Regulate body temperature.
- Distribute hormones.
- Protect against infections.
5. Disorders of the Circulatory System
- Hypertension: High blood pressure.
- Heart Attack: Blockage of coronary arteries.
- Stroke: Blockage in brain blood vessels.
- Anemia: Low RBC count or hemoglobin.
- Varicose Veins: Swollen veins due to faulty valves.
6. Important Facts for Railway NTPC Exam
- The heart beats 72 times per minute.
- Blood pH is 7.4.
- Largest artery: Aorta.
- Largest vein: Vena Cava.
- Universal donor: O-negative.
- Universal recipient: AB-positive.
