Design Project _HVAC

You are acting as the Lead Designer on your discipline of choice on a given case study project. The
following provide a guideline of the progress of your project and the coverage of the design/analysis.

HVAC DETAIL DESIGN

Step 1
Utility Connections & Maximum Load Calculations
01. Estimate the air change rate and ventilation for toilet and pantry, and fresh air for each room
02. Set noise criteria level for each room (with table and charts)
03. Calculate cooling load and heating demand for each room and whole building.
04. Select the type and decide the number of Water cooled chillers and cooling towers. (With
calculations, charts)
05. Determine the locations and size of Chiller plant room.
06. Select the type and decide the number of chilled water pumps and condensing water pumps.
(With calculations, charts)
07. Determine the locations and size of Chilled water pump plant room.
08. Calculate make-up water tank
09. Stating the expected electrical and other fuel requirement for the system.
IES or recognized procedures as set out in CIBSE and elated documents can be used.

Step 2
01. Main cooling and heating system schematic
02. Showing selection of spaces emitters,
03. Zoning and energy source.
04. Detailed Ventilation schematic that should have an air-handling unit that services a number of
spaces,
05. Clearing indicating the level of cooling, heading, humidity control, recirculation
06. Heat/cooling recovery selected for the system.
07. Detail the control strategy for the HVAC system.
08. Develop smoke control strategies that include dampers and protection of escape routes.
09. Consider difficult aspects of the design such as pressurize escape routes.
Schematic should be neat and all text should be legible. CAD, BlueBeam or hand sketch are
acceptable.

Step 3
Identify a difficult aspect of the system you are designing. It shows deep understanding to
identify the issues with a design, so your selection should not be taken lightly. Example: “Is there a
space where air change rates will change dramatically over a day?” To get to the point of
identifying the key issues significant amounts of reading of design guides and iterations of design
process would be required.
Demonstrate you can undertake the design decisions and calculations required to provide a
suitable for the difficult situation presented above. This allows you to show you have met the design
objectives of the module and the course without repeating over and over again the same
calculations.
01. Design ceiling plan (1200x600) / (600x600) for Lighting, Air diffuser, Sprinkler head
02. Determine the fresh air and exhaust air louvers location.
03. Select ventilation fan for toilets and pantry. (Flow rate and static pressure)
04. Select the type and decide the number of Fan Coil / AHU and PAU for the rooms (with
psychometric charts, Flow rate and static pressure)
05. Select Split-type unit / VRV for any room with 24-hour operation
06. Design exhaust air duct (with calculations, equal friction method)

08. Design supply and return air duct (with calculations, equal friction method)
09. Design supply and return air grille (with calculations)
10. Design chilled water pipes, condensate water pipes, and condensing water pipes (with
calculations)
11. Arrange volume control dampers and fire dampers
12. Design control for Fan coil for each room and PAU (DDC control and BMS)
