Understanding Injective Functions

The document explains the concept of injective functions, which are functions where each element of the arrival set corresponds to a unique element of the departure set. It outlines competencies to develop, methods to determine injectivity both algebraically and graphically, and introduces the horizontal line test as a graphical method for checking injectivity. Examples illustrate how to apply these methods to determine if specific functions are injective.

Injective Function

COMPETENCIES TO DEVELOP.
1.- DETERMINE WHEN A FUNCTION IS INJECTIVE OR
ONE BY ONE.
2.- CREATE THE GRAPH OF AN INJECTIVE FUNCTION.
3.- USE THE GRAPHIC METHOD TO DETERMINE IF A
IS OR IS NOT INJECTIVE.
It is said that a function f is injective if each element of
arrival set corresponds to a unique element of the
set of departure X. That is, there cannot be more than one value
ofX that has the same imageY. They are also called
of functions 'uno to uno'.
In mathematical terms, a function f will be injective if given
two pointsayxb:

In other words: a function is injective if it holds that

A graphical check of the injectivity of a function is

when any line parallel to the X-axis intersects it, like
maximum, at a point.
Example 1. Determine if the function = 2x + 1is injective.

The horizontal line test is performed to check if a function is injective or not.
It consists of drawing a horizontal line parallel to the x-axis and seeing how many points it intersects.
that line to the graph.
If any horizontal line intersects the graph at two or more points, the function is not injective.
If all horizontal lines intersect at most one point, the function is injective.
Horizontal line test.
The geometric interpretation of the above is
that a horizontal line (y = constant) can
cut the graph of a one-to-one function
when much at one point. In addition, if everything
horizontal line that cuts the graph of a
function does it at most at one point,
necessarily the function is one to one. One

the horizontal cuts its graph more than once.
The graphs of the functions = 2+ 1y = 3, as well as
a horizontal line y = c that intersects the graphs of f and g, as how
shown in the figure.
In figure a) it is indicated that there are two numbers. 1 2, in the
domain defines for those 1= 2=
.
In figure b) it is seen that for every horizontal line y = c that
Cross the graph, there is only one number 1in the domain of g, such
what 1= .
So the function f is not one-to-one, while the
function g, yes it is.
A one-to-one function can be defined in several ways.
Based on the previous description, the following statement makes sense:

A function is one-to-one if and only if = it implies that = for

all in the definition domain.
