Hi my speaking enthusiasts! It's great to have you back on my blog.

I’ve recently stumbled upon

a poem about opportunities, and it has made me recall some of my griefs and highlights on my
journey of public speaking. Sometimes I wonder if I should write about this, but my struggles
might be what makes this relatable. So, read on if you want to know more about them!

As some of you might already know, I was diagnosed with depression in my teenage years.
Trapped with a pessimistic mindset, I've never thought of stepping out of my comfort zone– not
to mention even trying. Until one day, where I happen to come across a gleam of hope.

Have you ever tried public speaking? I used to shiver on my feet by just hearing the barbaric
word. The look of criticism, words that hurt like knives, just people staring at me makes me want
to bury myself somewhere far away. But then, a teacher of mine recommended me to join the
school's speech festival! Could I ever speak in front of the entire school? At that time, the
answer was a definite no. I immediately rejected the idea and distanced myself away from
anything related. However, a strange feeling rose as I watched classmates win the competition.
Deep down, I knew I could have done better. The champion could have been me.

I've once heard a saying that goes by,” the tragedy of what could have been is nearly as
crippling as what once was but can never be again.” With that possibility looping in my mind, I
must agree. After my realization of what stopped me from that- my pathetic cowardice, I fell into
bottomless despair. I prayed and hoped desperately for a way to make up for that opportunity I
missed, and luckily, I was answered.

Gone are the days that I hid behind curtains and flocked when opportunities arrived. The
moment I saw the promotion leaflet for the Hong Kong Schools’ Speech festival, I signed up
seaminglessly without a shadow of doubt. It was my golden opportunity, my chance to finally
shine and no longer be the odd one out.

As some of you might have guessed, yes, I won the competition. In no way speaking is just for
the popular kids, everyone can express their ideas and themselves! Looking back, that was my
first championship and my first competition. Fascinating, isn't it? Here I am, as an experienced
TED talker, a recent winner in the ESU International Public Speaking Competition, and your
favorite blogger. If I hadn't given my utmost endeavor in my first competition, I wouldn't have
today's success. But most importantly, was that step of courage I took. The moral of the story is
to treasure every opportunity you encounter- whether it's small or big. Grab that chance with
your full potential and show them what you've got!
