Present continuous
Definition
The Present Continuous tense (also called Present Progressive) describes an action that is happening
right now or around the current time. (this..)
It can also express future plans. (time adverbial)
🧩 Structure
Subject + am / is / are + verb-ing
Subject Auxiliary verb Main verb (-ing form) Example
I am eating I am eating lunch.
You / We / They are playing They are playing football.
He / She / It is studying She is studying English.
🔍 When to Use Present Continuous
1. Actions happening right now
🕒 Something you are doing at this exact moment.
➡️I am talking to you right now.
➡️She is watching TV.
2. Temporary actions (around now)
🕓 Something happening these days, not necessarily at the exact moment.
➡️I am learning French these days.
➡️He is staying with his friend for a week.
3. Planned future actions
When the action is arranged or decided.
➡️We are meeting them tomorrow.
➡️She is flying to London next week.
4. Changing or developing situations
🌱 To describe trends or gradual change.
➡️The weather is getting colder.
➡️My English is improving.
🚫 When NOT to Use It
Do not use Present Continuous with stative (non-action) verbs, like:
know, believe, love, hate, need, understand, remember, want, like
❌ I am knowing the answer.
✅ I know the answer.
