Functional Patterns of Marjory Gordon
The assessment of the patient is very important to understand their response to
vital processes or health problems, real or potential, that can be addressed by
the nurses; that is to say, the assessment of the patient to reach the nursing diagnosis.
To carry out this assessment, within the project, it has been decided to use a
tool that can be used regardless of the nursing model followed.
Thus the proposal by M. Gordon with his Functional Patterns (1982) was chosen.
Functional Patterns are a configuration of behaviors, more or less
common to all people, which contribute to their health, quality of life and the achievement of
its human potential, and that they occur in a sequential manner over time.
The use of Functional Patterns allows for a nursing assessment.
systematic and premeditated, with which a significant amount of data is obtained,
relevant information about the patient (physical, mental, social, and environmental) in an organized manner,
which facilitates, in turn, the analysis of them; that is to say, it meets all the requirements
required for a correct valuation.
The assessment by Functional Patterns focuses its attention on 11 areas (or patterns)
with importance for the health of individuals, families, or communities, which are
interactive and independent.
The 11 Functional Patterns are named as follows:
Pattern 1: Perception - health management
Pattern 2: Nutritional - metabolic
Pattern 3: Elimination
Pattern 4: Activity - exercise
- Pattern 5: Dream - rest
Pattern 6: Cognitive - perceptual
Pattern 7: Self-perception - self-concept
Pattern 8: Role - relationships
Pattern 9: Sexuality - reproduction
Pattern 10: Adaptation - stress tolerance
- Pattern 11: Values - beliefs
In the following lines, we will develop the different Patterns regarding their
contents and objectives, as well as in the way they can be made into a
useful and practical tool in evaluation, through the exposure of questions
relevant aspects and points of attention related to each of them. The focus and the
limits of the questions used in this document involve a slight adaptation to
the needs of the project itself, since it does not work with individuals, as
yes it occurs in regular nursing professional practice, if not with prototypes or
abstractions of individuals in a specific pathological situation.
VALUATION BY FUNCTIONAL PATTERNS
PATTERN 1: PERCEPTION - MANAGEMENT OF HEALTH
This Pattern basically describes how the individual perceives health and
well-being, and how it manages everything related to its health, regarding its maintenance
or recovery.
Therefore, it includes preventive practices of all kinds (hygienic habits,
vaccinations, self-examinations recommended for the population, etc.), adherence to
prescribed medical or nursing treatments and the avoidance or control of practices
social issues harmful to health (drug consumption, alcohol, tobacco, etc).
Specifically, by assessing this pattern we aim to determine the
perceptions about the individual's health, the general management of their health and practices
preventive.
PATTERN 2: NUTRITIONAL - METABOLIC
By evaluating this Pattern, the aim is to determine the customs of
food and liquid consumption, in relation to metabolic needs of the
individual, and the possibilities of availability of those. It will also explore the
possible problems with its intake.
Likewise, the characteristics of the skin and mucous membranes will be determined, as well as their condition.
He will inquire about size, weight, and temperature.
PATTERN 3: ELIMINATION
Describe the pattern of the excretory function (intestinal, urinary, and skin) and all the
aspects related to it: personal routines, use of devices or materials for
its control or production and characteristics of the excretions.
PATTERN 4: ACTIVITY - EXERCISE
This pattern describes the capabilities for autonomous mobility and activity, and for
the execution of exercises. It also describes leisure and recreation customs. Look for
to know the level of autonomy of the individual for daily life activities that
they require some degree of energy consumption.
PATTERN 5: DREAM - REST
Describe the patterns of sleep, rest, and relaxation throughout the day, and their uses and
individual customs to achieve them.
PATTERN 6: COGNITIVE - PERCEPTUAL
It describes the sensory-perceptual and cognitive pattern of the individual.
The adaptation of visual, auditory, gustatory, tactile functions is observed.
olfactory; checking, if applicable, the existence of prosthetics for their correction.
In this pattern, the existence or absence of pain is also determined. Likewise, it
they check the cognitive abilities related to decision making, memory and
the language.
PATTERN 7: SELF-PERCEPTION - SELF-CONCEPT
Describe the self-concept pattern and self-perceptions. Include the
attitudes of the individual towards themselves, towards their body image and their identity, and towards
its general sense of worth. Observe the pattern of conversation and the manifestations of
nonverbal language (body posture, eye contact, etc).
PATTERN 8: ROLE - RELATIONS
This pattern includes the social role that the individual plays within the family.
labor, etc. As well as the responsibilities that must be assumed due to it. They
will give importance, when evaluating this pattern, to the existence of problems in relationships
family and/or social.
PATTERN 9 SEXUALITY - REPRODUCTION
Describe the patterns of satisfaction or dissatisfaction with sexuality, and likewise,
describe the reproductive pattern and everything related to it.
PATTERN 10: ADAPTATION - STRESS TOLERANCE
Describe the general pattern of adaptation and effectiveness in terms of tolerance to
estrés. Incluye la reserva individual o la capacidad para resistirse a las amenazas para la
personal integrity, ways to manage stress, support systems from family or others
type and perceived capacity to control and manage situations.
PATTERN 11: VALUES - BELIEFS
Describe the patterns of values, objectives, and beliefs (including spiritual ones) that
guide the individual's vital decisions and options. It includes what is perceived as
important in life and the perception of conflict in values, beliefs and
expectations related to health.
