Descriptive Paragraph Structure

A good descriptive paragraph has three main parts:

● The Topic Sentence (1 sentence)

● Supporting Sentences (2+)
● The Concluding Sentence (1)
1. The Topic Sentence
The topic sentence is the first sentence of your paragraph.
It introduces the main idea — who or what you are going to describe.

Here are other topic sentence examples:

1. Amanda is one of the most attractive people I know.

3. My grandmother is the best person in the world.
2. Supporting Sentences
Supporting sentences give details about your topic.
They make your description interesting and easy to imagine.

Examples:

● She has long, wavy hair and big brown eyes.

● She is friendly and always helps her classmates.

● She likes painting and listening to music in her free time.

3. The Concluding Sentence
The concluding sentence is the last sentence of your paragraph.

It summarizes your ideas or gives your final opinion or feeling about the
person.

1. To conclude, Jane is an outstanding person.

2. I love Samantha a lot!

3. My uncle is the best person in the family!

4. I think my friend Jack has a very interesting appearance and personality.

5. My cousin is my favorite relative.

LINKERS & CONJUNCTIONS
(Connecting words – they help join ideas and make a
paragraph flow smoothly)
● They make your paragraph more organized, logical, and easy to read.

● Using a variety of linkers and conjunctions shows that you can write
cohesive and connected sentences, which is very important in a
descriptive paragraph.
