Chapter 5 - Business Objectives

1. Business Objectives:
 Definition: Aims or targets a business works towards.
 Benefits: Clear targets for employees, Informed decision-making,
Organizational alignment, Performance comparison.
2. Private Sector Business Objectives:
 Business Survival: Adapt to the environment, adjust product
prices if needed.
 Generating Profit: Provide returns to owners and finance further
investment.
 Returns to Shareholders: Encourage shareholders to retain
shares, achieved through increased profit or share price.
 Growth of Business: Increase salaries, achieve economies of
scale by satisfying customers.
 Market Share: Proportion of total market sales, provides publicity
and influence over suppliers/customers.
 Service to Community: Provide jobs, support disadvantaged
groups, and protect the environment.
3. Stakeholder Objectives:
 Stakeholders: Individuals with a direct interest in business
performance.
 Internal Stakeholders: Work in or own the company (owners,
managers, workers).
 External Stakeholders: Outside the business (consumers,
government, banks).
 Each group has different objectives for business performance.
 Internal Stakeholders: Payments, profits, business growth,
increased investment value.
 Customers: Reliable products, value for money, good quality,
design, and service.
 Government: Tax revenue, employment, national output
increase.
 Banks: Profit from loans.
4. Stakeholder Conflict:
 Different stakeholders may have conflicting objectives.
 Managers must compromise to balance the best interests of the
company.
