MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION
UNIT 1: BUILDING SUBSYSTEMS
Prepared by:
Joshua Shem Barachina, CE
UNIT LEARNING OUTCOMES
In this unit, here are the following desired learning outcomes:
✘ Determine the different building subsystems and its
interrelationship with a building
✘ Understand the design alternatives to recommend appropriate
solutions that suit the site, climate, building type, and occupants.
✘ Relate the sustainability concept forward through building design,
construction, commissioning, operation and, ultimately, demolition,
recycling and reuse.

2
BUILDING SUBSYSTEMS
Building subsystems are a complete group of elements or set
of parts that form and function as a unit within a finished
building.
It is the utilities and services supplied and distributed within a
building generally related to the building environment namely:
HVAC (Heating-Ventilation and Air Conditioning), lighting,
plumbing and piping (water supply and waste disposal),
electrical supply, gas supply, fire protection, and security
protection, among others.
An efficient building system is made up of many elemental
systems.
3
BUILDING SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainability is our ability to meet current needs without
harming the environmental, economic, and societal systems
on which future generations will rely for meeting their needs.
A sustainable or green building is designed to lessen the
overall impact of a building on the environment and human
health by efficiently using resources (i.e., energy, materials, and
water), enhancing occupant health and employee
productivity, and eliminating or reducing waste and pollution.

4
COMMERCIAL BUILDING ENERGY USE

5
HVAC SYSTEM
HVAC systems stands for heating, ventilating,
air-conditioning.
It controls the ambient environment
(temperature, humidity, air flow, and air filtering)
and must be planned for and operated along
with other building components.

6
LIGHTING SYSTEM

Modern lighting is demand-oriented, convenient and

energy-saving.

7
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Electrical system should be properly planned since it

plays a fundamental part in the technology we use.

8
PLUMBING SYSTEM

The plumbing system are divided into two parts:

water supply and waste disposal systems. As part of
hygiene, water supply systems should not be
contaminated by backflow from waste disposal
systems.

9
ACOUSTICAL CONTROL SYSTEM

Acoustical control system is part of mitigating sound

transfer between spaces through design, details, and
insulating materials.

10
BUILDING CONVEYING SYSTEM

Building conveying system mechanically move

occupants and goods. In most buildings, these
systems include passenger and freight elevators,
dumbwaiters, escalators, moving ramps and
walkways, and lifts for people and wheelchairs.

11
TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM

Telecommunication system uses electricity, light

(visible and infrared), or radio waves to transmit
signals that carry voice and data transmissions.

12
GAS SUPPLY SYSTEM

Gas supply system are set up for certain structures

that require it. Some of these are laboratories,
restaurants, some residential houses, and others

13
FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM

Fire protection system is a vital part of the building

safety management systems. The integration of
protection from fire hazard in the building design and
construction is one of the many responsibilities of
architects and engineers.

14
SECURITY PROTECTION SYSTEM

Security protection system are designed to guard

persons and property against a broad range of
hazards, including crime, accidents, espionage,
sabotage, subversion, and attack.

Let’s review some concepts
