you will hear a number of different recordings
and you will have to answer questions on what you hear
there will be time for you to read the instructions
and questions
and you will have a chance to check your work
all the recordings will be played once only
the test is in four parts
write all your answers
in the Listening Question booklet
at the end of the test you will be given
10 minutes to transfer your answers to an answer sheet
now turn to Part 1 on page 2 of your question booklet
part 1
you will hear a woman
telephoning an international school in Dubai
for information
first
you have some time to look at questions 1 to seven
now listen carefully and answer questions 1 to seven
the international School how can I help you
good morning
I was wondering if you could give me some information
I've just moved to Dubai and I have a boy of eight
I'm looking for a school for him
could you give me some details about your school
yes of course
the lower school takes children aged four to seven
and the middle school
is for those aged seven to thirteen
children then
go on to one of the senior schools in the area
until they are 18
my neighbor told me you're near a golf course
is that right yes
that's right there's one just across from us
right could you give me the address
of course we're in Meadows Drive
that's m E
a d O W
s drive you can't miss us
okay got that
can I ask you a few more questions
go right ahead
does the school have a uniform at all
my son didn't have to wear one at his last school
yes and it's actually quite smart
we've just changed the color
from a dark green shirt to a blue one
that's with black trousers or shorts
what's the school timetable like
well lessons begin at 7:20 Sunday to Thursday
although we do open at 7:00
lessons finish at 12:40 and the school closes at 2:30
that's interesting
because I leave here very early to get to work
do you provide breakfast
or does my son need to have this at home
no we have an early start program
and we provide that for all the children
who arrive early excellent
and after school we have a range of activities
on what we call our late stay program
there's some playtime and help with homework
but we offer sport activities as well
for example last term we had basketball after school
and now it's swimming good
and what sort of music lessons are there
we have an orchestra
and a rock band for the older children
and a junior band for the younger ones
my son plays the piano
could he have lessons at the school
yes we have lessons on Tuesdays after school
we also have flute on Thursdays and clarinet on Mondays
that's great what about languages
my son would like to do Spanish
because his grandparents are from Mexico
no problem he's 8
isn't he well
he can do that now
as classes start from when the children of seven
when he's 10 we offer French or German as well
before you hear the rest of the conversation
you have some time to look at questions 8 to ten
now listen and answer questions 8 to ten
now what about enrollment
could I come along sometime and see the head teacher
yes indeed
her name's Elizabeth Rose
she's usually free to speak to parents most days
well I could come in on Wednesday next week
I usually have a free day on a Tuesday
but that's been changed for next week
okay what around 9:30
suit you could we make it a bit later
say 10:15 I have a dentist appointment at 9:40
great now the head will give you a guided tour
of course
but is there anything special you're interested in
for example some parents are interested in speaking to
the sports teacher oh
I think it would be great to have a word with
the science teacher
I think that's a subject my son will be very good at
okay we have a break for coffee at 12
so you can do that then I'll make a note of that
I should also tell you that on that day
you'll be able to see some
that is the end of part 1
you now have one minute
to check your answers to part one
part 2
you will hear part of a talk at a public meeting
about a road and rail improvement project
first you have some time to look at questions
11 to fifteen
now listen carefully and answer questions 11 to fifteen
welcome everyone
thanks for coming to this information evening
the purpose of this meeting is to give you a
chance to learn more about
the road and rail improvement project
we've identified several problem areas
and we've come up with some changes that
we think will improve the local environment
for the shared access paths
by those
I mean the paths shared by both bikes and pedestrians
we plan to turn these into open areas
with grass around them
cyclists and pedestrians need to be able to
see each other clearly
to avoid any accidents
so we've decided to remove the large
native trees from the area for that reason
now along the highway
we want to put trees that are native to this area
to add shade and make it more attractive
we thought possibly the spotted gum
which grows naturally here
now I know those of you who live in the housing estate
are disturbed by the sound of traffic nearby
we're aiming to solve this problem
by constructing a wall between the estate
and the road and possibly in the future
we might consider adding some artwork to it
we think this will be quite an effective solution
moving on now to the local roads
we want to encourage more public transport use
and solve some of our traffic problems
so
we're going to add a considerable number of stops to
the bus routes that run along those roads
just finally as a way of thanking the community
for their cooperation
we plan to make the picnic area in the park
near the bus terminal more attractive
so we're adding some colourful
new rose beds that our gardeners will be putting in
at the completion of the project
before you hear the rest of the talk
you have some time to look at questions 16 to twenty
now listen and answer questions 16 to twenty
now I'd like to give you
more information
about the renovations to Richlands train station
can you all see a copy of the plan
we envisage Richlands Station
as more than just a train station
it'll be a transport hub
linking all forms of transport in the area
to this end
we're building an underground park and ride car park
so commuters can drive to the station
park and then ride to work on the train
that's the entrance to it
on the corner of progress and Garden Road
you can drive into it from Progress Road
now on the Progress Road side of the site
on the top left of your map
is where we plan to put the bus interchange
commuters will have direct access to the platform
from the bus interchange via a covered walkway
cycling is an important
part of our city's transport plan
so cyclists will also be fully coded for
with 80 new bicycle lockers
you can see where they are on the plan
in the bottom left hand corner next to the bike path
cyclists can ride to the station
store their bikes in the lockers and board the train
oh and I forgot the most important thing
you'll even be able to shower at the station
after your bike ride
as we're installing showers between the toilets
and the platform
will also install a fountain at the station
to make the area more attractive
you can see it in the centre of the plan
and between the fountain and the ticket machine
we're putting in a lift
for our elderly and disabled passengers
they will be able to buy their ticket
then pass directly to the platform via the lift
so I hope that gives you a much better idea of
the new facilities
that will be available at Richlands Station
now we would like your feedback about the project so
that is the end of part 2
you now have 30 seconds
to check your answers to part two
this Iotz listening audio is specially made by Iotz
Mirco Telegram channel
if you want more join my Telegram channel Iotz
you will hear two health
science students called Elliott and Beth
discussing research on climate change and allergies
first you have some time to look at questions 21 to 25
now listen carefully and answer questions 21 to 25
have you had a chance to look at the information
for our project yet Beth
I've had a look at most of the stuff
on the relationship between climate change
and allergies and the role played by pollen
from flowering plants and trees
yeah me too
the main message
is that seasonal allergies seem to be getting worse
in just the last 20 years
the amount of pollen that's produced by the flowers on
birch trees has tripled
and one in four people suffers from either hay fever
or asthma which is triggered by pollen
I read something about allergy sufferers
being more likely to have a vitamin d deficiency
because we no longer take cod liver oil
as a vitamin supplement
like many people used to do in the 1950s in Britain
and since then
allergies have quadrupled in most European countries
but it was only in Britain
that cod liver oil was so popular
so that argument doesn't really make sense
no it doesn't seem that relevant
what seems to be happening now
is that an increasing number of people
are getting their first attack
in their 40s and fifties hmm
that must be because of the link with climate change
causing rising temperatures
but CO2 levels are seriously affecting pollen counts
too as much as mild winters
definitely CO2 helps stimulate plant growth
and several recent studies have shown that
when plants are exposed to more CO2
they produce more pollen really
so people might experience more severe
allergic symptoms in future
that's right hmm
and another factor is that
the pollen season is changing
yes
scientists are predicting spring will come five weeks
earlier by 2130
that's in the long term
but that doesn't mean that spring will come earlier
every year look at last winter
that was really cold until March
and the pollen season was delayed
whereas this year spring came earlier and lasted longer
right and another thing we should mention is ragweed
as an example of a plant species moving into new areas
as a result of climate change
yes in the US
it's already the major allergen
affecting millions of people in August and September
but we're starting to see it grow in Europe
for the first time
which is really worrying because it's so allergenic
the problem with tree pollen is also worse in cities
because there are so many hard surfaces around
and the pollen doesn't get absorbed so much
just stays in the air yeah
wasn't the pollen shown to be three times higher
in one city I think so
so because of this many cities have started to ban
the planting of certain types of trees
before you hear the rest of the discussion
you have some time to look at questions 26 to thirty
now listen and answer questions 26 to thirty
so shall we look at the different data tables
for seasonal changes for pollen in Europe
okay but
I think we should just focus on the trees and plants
which we have the most data for
so that's oak trees and birch trees and grass
yes that makes it more manageable
shall we go through the data for each country in detail
and pick out anything interesting
all right so starting with Austria
well here we've only got data for birch pollen
I wonder why there's no data for oak or grass
hmm it would be interesting
to compare with neighboring countries
true
the picture in France is unusual
yes
the pollen season starts earlier for both oak and birch
but it doesn't start any earlier for grass
I wonder why that is
in the Netherlands
we've got complete data for all three plants
so what does it show
grass
and birch pollen are only starting a few days earlier
but oak pollen is starting much earlier
18 days in fact hmm
that's unusual
there's not such a big difference in other countries
no Switzerland's an interesting case
the pollen season starts here earlier than in the past
for oak birch and grass
yeah from 21 days to 14 days earlier
yeah the UK shows a different picture again
yeah here
the problem is that wet summers have extended
the grass pollen season from five weeks to eight weeks
which is bad news for allergy sufferers right
well I think we should have another
that is the end of part 3
you now have 30 seconds
to check your answers to part three
part 4
you will hear a talk at a university open day
to students
interested in following a course in textiles
and business studies
first you have some time to look at questions
31 to forty
now listen carefully and answer questions 31 to forty
thank you first of all
for coming along to the University's Open Day
and in particular for coming to this talk
to find out about our course in textiles
with Business Studies
the cooperation between the faculty of
Arts and architecture and the business faculty
enables us to offer this undergraduate
and integrated masters course
in the five years this course has been running
we've Learned a lot and it's become very popular
now thanks to the faculty of engineering
we're also able to offer a really
exciting opportunity
to those who would like to further diversify
and would like to carry their learning through into
new disciplines
now the aims of this course are firstly
to create innovative
and highly motivated textile practitioners
within the disciplines of knitted textiles
an increasingly popular area
as you will have seen on the catwalks
printed and of course woven textiles
secondly we also ensure that our students gain an in
depth knowledge
and understanding of related business operations
we make sure that our students
have sufficient hands on experience
by arranging interesting and relevant work placements
the focus of the integrated component of the work
placement is the global market
our aim is to locate studio work in this increasingly
important context
moving on to what we do in each year
in the first year
students explore the three subject areas of textiles
in rotation
the emphasis for the first year is experimentation
and we ask for evidence of visual research
which must be supported by documentation
and proposals for its application
in Year 2 design and technical skills
are related to the real world
unlike many other university textile courses these days
we give our students the opportunity to choose
an extra module on the traditional processes of design
which gives a historical perspective on their work
this can be done
before introducing students to Computer Aided design
students at this point Year 2
decide if they intend to complete the course at Year 3
with a BA ons
or progress to Year 4
and conclude with a Masters in design
students can also have tutorials
if they feel they need help
making this important decision
this reflects our commitment to student support
at all times
Year 3 consolidates the knowledge gained
using a particular learning style
it's called reflective practice
that means you look back on what you've done
and analyze and evaluate your subject
in both academic and professional contexts
this helps and encourages deeper understanding
students produce a dissertation on
a topic of their own choosing
and a portfolio of their textile collection
also
to help underpin the commercial aspect of the course
we ask for a business plan
on the subject of career opportunities
many graduates work directly within
the textile business with careers
commonly found as stylists and retail managers
however
it shouldn't be forgotten that there are many other
exciting opportunities out there
for example
careers in journalism for those with a flair for words
or trend forecasting
for those with their eye on the future
we are certain that we shall
see broader and more varied opportunities
for our graduates
if you like what you've heard today
and are thinking of applying for the program
and you'd like to talk to us further
please come back tomorrow
you'll have the opportunity to do a brief interview
where we'll be able to
assess your aptitude for this subject area
many students who haven't studied related subjects
may be surprised to find that
they're quite well suited to our program
after that of course
you'll need to go through the usual
application procedures
that is the end of part 4
you now have one minute to check your answers
to part four
that is the end of the listening test
you now have 10 minutes to transfer your answers
to the listening answer sheet
oh my God
you have two minutes left
you have one minute left
please stop writing and wait for your question
booklet to be collected
