SIGANLS AND SYSTEMS

Tutorial :Sampling
1. Consider a signal x(t) = 2 cos(200πt) + 5 sin(300πt) + 10 cos2(400πt).
(i) Find the minimum sampling rate for the signal in order to reconstruct the signal from its
samples,
(ii) Sampling rate for the signal which will be equal to 4 times that of its Nyquist rate.
(iii) Discuss the selection of cut of frequencies (or its ranges) for reconstruction filters in the
cases of (i) and (ii)

2. Consider a signal xδ(t) is obtained by sampling the signal x(t) = 2 cos(500πt) + 5 sin(600πt) at a rate
of 1500 samples/s. Draw the spectrum of the signals x(t) and xδ(t).

3. Consider a DT signal xδ(t) is obtained by sampling the signal x(t) = 2 cos(2πfot) at a rate of 3000
samples/s. The sampled signal x δ(t) is passed through low pass filter with cut off frequency of 1500
Hz. Then, determine the signal coming out of the LPF while,
(i) fo = 1000 Hz
(ii) fo = 2000 Hz,
(iii) fo= 2500 Hz.

4. Consider a DT signal xδ(t) is obtained by sampling the signal x(t) = 2 cos(1000πt) at a rate defined
by Fs. Draw the signal (a) x(t) and its sampled version x δ(t) in CT domain, b) the spectrums of x(t)
and xδ(t) ,if
(i) Fs = 1000 samples/s,
(ii) Fs = 4000 samples/s,
(iii) Fs = 400 samples/s.

5. Consider a signal xδ(t) is obtained by sampling the signal x(t) = 2 cos(500πt) at a rate of 800
samples/s. The sampled signals is passed through low pass filter with cut off frequency of 1000 Hz.
Then, determine the frequency components present in the signal coming out of the LPF.

6. Consider a signal xδ(t) is obtained by sampling the signal, x(t) = 2 cos(700πt) + 2 cos(200πt) + 5
sin(600πt) at a rate of 800 samples/s. The sampled signals is passed through low pass filter with
cut off frequency of 1000 Hz to receive y(t).
(i) Determine the frequency components present in the signal coming out of the LPF.
(ii) Calculate the power of the signals x(t) and y(t).

7. Consider a signal xδ(t) is obtained by sampling the signal x(t) = 2 cos(200πt) at a rate 8 times that of
its Nyquist rate. Assume the pulse width is equal to 1/32 of the fundamental period of x(t).
(i) Draw signal xδ(t) in the time domain if the sampler is (a) ideal sampler, (b) natural sampler,
(c) flat top sampler.
(ii) Draw the power / magnitude spectrum of the signalxδ(t) for the cases (i).
(iii) Compare and comment the results.
8. Consider a signal x(t) is bandlimited to W i.e. its Fourier transform X(ω) is zero for |ω|>W. Let y(t) =
x(t) * x(t). (* denotes convolution).

(i) Let X (ω)=rect ( ) ω

2W
and find x(t), y(t) and Y(ω)

(ii) Comment on the Nyquist rate for the signals x(t) and y(t) in order to reconstruct them from
their samples.

9. Determine the sampling period (Ts) for the following signals so that each signal x(t) is uniquely
recovered from its discrete time samples x[n]= x δ ( t ) ∨¿t =nT ¿= x[nTs].
s

(i) x (t )=cos ( 3 πt ) +2 sin ( πt ) +3 cos2 (2 πt)

(ii) x (t )=cos ( 3 πt ) sinc (3 t)+2 sin ( πt ) sinc( t)+ 3 cos(2 πt)
