MODULE 2 – SECOND QUARTER

A. TITLE:
The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics: Foundations of Temperature and Thermal
Equilibrium
Learning Objective (LO):
Critique the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics and its implications for temperature,

importance in understanding energy systems.
B. PRE-ACTIVITY / PRE-TEST
Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write the answer on the space

B. A and C are in thermal equilibrium
C. A and C must be the same material
D. Temperature becomes undefined
2. Thermal equilibrium occurs when two objects:
A. Have different temperatures
B. Continuously exchange heat
C. Have no net heat flow between them
D. Conduct heat poorly
3. Which statement reflects the purpose of temperature scales?

C. CONTENT
1. What Is the Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics?
The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics establishes that:
If system A is in thermal equilibrium with system B, and system B is in thermal
equilibrium with system C, then A is in thermal equilibrium with system C.
This simple but powerful principle defines temperature as a measurable and
consistent property shared by systems in equilibrium.

2. Implications of the Zeroth Law

A. Temperature as a Measurable Quantity
The law allows us to treat temperature as a real, physical parameter that consistently
indicates how hot or cold a body is.
Without this law, temperature scales (°C, °F, K) would have no physical meaning.

B. Thermal Equilibrium
Two systems are in thermal equilibrium when no net heat flow occurs between
them.
This state means they share the same temperature.
Examples:
 A thermometer equilibrating with a cup of water
 Human body adjusting to room temperature
 Electronics requiring stable thermal conditions

C. Basis of Thermometers
A thermometer must reach thermal equilibrium with another object to read its
temperature.
Thanks to the Zeroth Law, we know:
 A thermometer can represent the temperature of any system it equilibrates
with.
 Temperature readings are meaningful across different devices and scales.

D. Foundation of Temperature Scales

All temperature scales assume that temperature is:
 Transitive (valid comparison between systems)
 Consistent
 Measurable using equilibrium
Thus, Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin are all legitimate because of the Zeroth Law’s
guarantee of thermal equivalence.

E. Relevance to Energy Systems

Energy systems — engines, refrigerators, power plants, HVAC systems — require
precise understanding of:
 When heat flows
 When equilibrium is reached
 How temperature differences drive energy transfer
The Zeroth Law explains why energy moves and when it stops moving.

3. Summary Table
Concept Description Example / Application
Zeroth Law Defines thermal equilibrium and Thermometers, temperature
temperature transitivity comparisons
Thermal No net heat transfer between Thermometer stabilizing in
Equilibrium systems water
Temperature Numerical assignment to Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin
Scale equilibrium states
Energy Depend on temperature Refrigerators, power plants,
Systems differences AC
D. EXTENSION (REAL-LIFE APPLICATIONS)
 Climate Systems: Earth’s atmosphere and oceans exchange heat until
regions reach temporary thermal equilibrium.
 Engineering: Engines depend on temperature gradients; equilibrium
determines energy efficiency.
 Home Appliances: Refrigerators and air conditioners regulate temperature
by preventing equilibrium with surroundings.
 Medical Field: Thermometers rely entirely on the Zeroth Law to measure
body temperature accurately.
 UAE Context: HVAC systems in desert climates must manage constant heat
flow to maintain equilibrium indoors.
Think about it:
What problems would occur in science, medicine, and engineering if thermal
equilibrium did NOT guarantee equal temperature?

Procedure:
1. Measure the initial temperature of the spoon.
2. Place the spoon in hot water for 2 minutes; record the final temperature.
3. Repeat with the cold water.
4. Compare initial and final temperatures.
5. Analyze your data using the table below.

 The Zeroth Law defines thermal equilibrium and establishes temperature
as a meaningful, comparable quantity.
 Thermometers and temperature scales rely entirely on this principle.
 Energy systems work because heat flows from higher to lower temperature
until equilibrium.
 Without the Zeroth Law, modern thermodynamics, climate science,
engineering, and even medical temperature measurement would collapse
logically.
