ECONOMICS PROJECT

TOPIC: MICRO AND SMALL SCALE INDUSTRIES Submitted By: Student of Class XII
Subject: Economics Session: 2025–26
INTRODUCTION
Micro and Small Scale Industries (MSSIs) are a critical pillar of India’s industrial sector.
They promote entrepreneurship, generate employment, and support economic
decentralization. These industries use limited capital investment but generate high
employment, especially in rural and semi■urban areas. The project aims to understand
their characteristics, importance, challenges, and the government’s role in their promotion.
DEFINITION AND CLASSIFICATION
According to the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act (MSMED),
industries are classified based on investment and turnover. - Micro Enterprises: Up to ■1
crore investment and ■5 crore turnover. - Small Enterprises: Up to ■10 crore investment
and ■50 crore turnover. These thresholds help categorize units and provide appropriate
policy support.
CHARACTERISTICS OF MSSIs
MSSIs share several unique characteristics: - Labour■intensive production - Use of local
resources - Flexibility in business operations - Low start■up cost - Quick decision■making
These features make them ideal for generating widespread employment and supporting
inclusive development.
ROLE AND SIGNIFICANCE
MSSIs contribute nearly 30% to India’s GDP and 50% to exports. They help reduce urban
pressure by promoting rural industries. They support artisans, craftsmen, and traditional
skills. MSSIs encourage local entrepreneurship and aid in equitable income distribution.
OBJECTIVES OF MSSIs
It is important to understand why these industries are promoted: - To generate
employment - To promote balanced regional development - To support rural
industrialization - To enhance export potential - To utilize local resources MSSIs help
ensure growth that benefits all sections of society.
TYPES OF MICRO AND SMALL INDUSTRIES
There are various types, each important in its own way: 1. Manufacturing Units 2.
Service■based Industries 3. Cottage and Village Industries 4. Export■Oriented Units 5.
Agro■Based Industries 6. Repair and Maintenance Units These industries produce goods,
provide services, or support the supply chain.
REGISTRATION PROCESS (UDYAM
REGISTRATION)
The Government of India introduced Udyam Registration for simplifying MSME
registration. It requires Aadhaar, PAN, and basic business information. The process is free
and online. After registration, units receive benefits like subsidies, collateral■free loans,
and priority sector status.
GOVERNMENT SCHEMES FOR MSSIs
Some important schemes include: - Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme (CGTMSE) - PMEGP
(Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme) - Cluster Development
Programme - Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme - Skill Development Initiatives These
schemes assist in finance, training, marketing, and technology.
ADVANTAGES OF MSSIs
MSSIs offer multiple advantages: - Low investment requirement - High employment
generation - Encourages entrepreneurship - Supports rural development - Helps preserve
traditional skills They also help reduce regional imbalances in the country.
CHALLENGES FACED BY MSSIs
Despite their importance, MSSIs face challenges: - Limited access to credit - Outdated
technology - Marketing issues - Competition from large firms - Lack of skilled manpower
Overcoming these challenges requires policy support and modernization.
CASE STUDY: A SMALL TEXTILE UNIT
A small textile unit established in a rural area with minimal investment employed local
women and used government credit schemes. With rising local demand and online
marketing, it expanded operations within three years. The unit demonstrates how micro
industries can uplift communities and promote self■reliance.
CONCLUSION
MSSIs form the backbone of India’s economic development. With proper support,
modernization, and financial access, they can continue to contribute significantly to GDP,
employment, and regional balance. They strengthen the rural economy and support
sustainable development.
