FOSSILS
&
FOSSILIZATION
PRESENTED BY: SHUBHANGI NIGAM
What Are Fossils?
Fossils are the preserved remains, impressions, or
traces of ancient organisms.
They provide evidence of past life forms and
environments.
Most fossils are found in sedimentary rocks.
Examples: Bones, teeth, shells, footprints, leaf
impressions.
Importance of Fossils
Help scientists study evolution and extinct species.
Provide clues about Earth's climate and geography in the past.
Assist in dating rocks (using index fossils).
Reveal mass extinction events and biodiversity changes over time
Types of Fossils
[Link] Fossils – Actual remains like bones, teeth, shells.
[Link] Fossils – Indications of activity like footprints, burrows.
[Link] Fossils – Impressions left in rock.
[Link] Fossils – Formed when a mold is filled with minerals.
[Link] Form Fossils – Original organism preserved in substances like
amber or ice.
What is Fossilization?
Fossilization is the process through which living organisms
become fossils.
It is a rare process – requires quick burial and specific conditions.
Can take thousands to millions of years.
Stages of Fossilization
1. Death – The organism dies.
2. Decay – Soft parts decompose; hard parts remain.
3. Burial – Covered by sediment like mud or sand.
4. Preservation – Minerals replace or fill parts.
5. Exposure – Erosion or excavation brings it to surface.
Fossilization Methods
1. Permineralization: Minerals deposit in empty spaces (e.g.,
bone).
2. Carbonization: Only a carbon outline remains.
3. Amber Preservation: Organism trapped in tree resin.
4. Freezing: Organism frozen in ice.
5. Impressions and Casts: Mold filled with minerals.
Famous Fossil Sites
La Brea Tar Pits – California, USA (Ice Age fossils).
Burgess Shale – Canada (Soft-bodied marine fossils).
Solnhofen Limestone – Germany (Archaeopteryx).
Chengjiang Fossil Site – China (Cambrian fossils).
Conclusion
Fossils give us a window into the distant past.
Fossilization is a rare and complex natural process.
Through fossils, we understand evolution, climate, and life
history.
Ongoing fossil discoveries continue to shape our knowledge
of Earth’s history.
