Experiment 1: Fabrication of a Wooden Bookshelf
Objective:
To fabricate a basic wooden bookshelf using essential carpentry tools and joining techniques,
while developing practical skills in measuring, cutting, assembling, and finishing wooden
components.
Tools & Materials Required:
Each tool plays a specific role in the fabrication process. Here's what you'll need:
• Plywood
• Dowel Pins
• Saw
• Chisel
• Drilling machine
• Wood Glue
• Portable Wood Cutter
• Wood Router
• Bosch Toolkit & Taparia Spanners
• Mallet
• Hacksaw
Step-by-Step Procedure:
1. Design Planning:
Begin by sketching a simple bookshelf design. Decide on the number of shelves,
overall height, width, and depth. Include dimensions for each panel and mark where
joints will be placed.
2. Material Preparation:
Place the plywood on a stable workbench. Use a measuring tape and pencil to mark
the dimensions of each panel—side supports, shelves, and back panel.
3. Cutting Panels:
Use a saw or portable wood cutter to cut the plywood according to the marked
dimensions. Ensure cuts are straight and clean. Use clamps to hold the wood steady
while cutting.
4. Drilling for Joints:
Mark the positions for dowel pins on the edges of the panels. Use a drill with the
appropriate bit size to create holes for the dowels. Make sure the holes are aligned
properly for a snug fit.
5. Joining Panels:
Apply wood glue into the drilled holes and insert dowel pins. Join the panels together
NOTE: Follow the listed precautions especially for special tools to ensure safe and accurate execution of the experiment. Page | 9

by aligning the dowels and pressing the pieces firmly. Use a mallet to gently tap the
joints into place.
6. Clamping and Drying:
Use clamps to hold the assembled structure tightly while the glue dries. Leave it
undisturbed for at least 2–3 hours to ensure strong bonding.
7. Edge Finishing:
Once the structure is dry, use a wood router to smooth the edges and add decorative
grooves if desired. This step enhances both safety and aesthetics.
8. Surface Finishing:
Sand all surfaces using sandpaper or a sanding machine to remove rough spots.
Optionally, apply varnish or wood polish to protect the surface and give it a
professional look.
Safety Precautions:
• Wear Safety Gear: Always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from wood
chips and dust. Use gloves when handling sharp tools or rough materials.
• Tool Awareness: Keep hands and fingers away from cutting blades and drill bits.
Never force a tool let it do the work.
• Ventilation: Work in a well-ventilated area, especially when using adhesives, varnish,
or polish.
• Stable Workspace: Ensure your workbench is stable and tools are properly
maintained to avoid accidents.
Conclusion:
Fabricating the bookshelf gave me hands-on experience with measuring, cutting, and joining
techniques while reinforcing safe tool use and design accuracy. Completing the task helped me
connect theory to practice and build a sturdy, finished product with confidence.
