Project on Consumer Rights

Consumers are the backbone of any economy. The concept of consumer rights ensures that
customers are protected from unfair trade practices and fraud. These rights empower consumers to
make informed decisions, seek redressal, and ensure fair treatment in the marketplace.

Consumer Right Description


Right to Safety Protection against goods and services that are hazardous to health or life.
Right to Information Consumers should be informed about the quality, quantity, purity, price, and standards
Right to Choose Consumers have the freedom to select from a variety of goods and services at compet
Right to be Heard Consumers’ interests should receive due consideration at appropriate forums.
Right to Seek Redressal Consumers have the right to fair settlement of genuine grievances.
Right to Consumer Education Consumers should be educated about their rights and responsibilities.

Consumer Protection Act, 2019


The Consumer Protection Act, 2019 was enacted to replace the 1986 Act and provide more efficient
consumer dispute resolution. It includes provisions for e-commerce regulation, establishment of the
Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), and the introduction of product liability.

Redressal Agency Jurisdiction (Value of Goods/Services)


District Commission Up to ■1 crore
State Commission ■1 crore to ■10 crore
National Commission Above ■10 crore

Consumer Responsibilities:
1. Always check the quality and standard marks such as ISI, AGMARK, or Hallmark.
2. Be aware of the rights and duties as a consumer.
3. Read labels and verify product information before purchase.
4. File complaints for unfair trade practices.
5. Demand receipts and bills for every purchase.
6. Use products as per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Consumer Awareness Chart (Example):


This chart represents the percentage of consumers aware of their rights in a recent survey.

• Right to Redressal – 55%
• Right to Education – 45%
