(a) 1 (b) 2 (c) 4 (d) 6
Following question consist of two statements – Assertion (A) and Reason (R). Answer
these questions selecting the appropriate option given below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.
5.. Assertion(A) : Carbon is the only element that can form large number of
compounds.
Reason (R) : Carbon is tetravalent and shows the property of catenation.
Section - B
6.i ) Covalent compounds have low melting and boiling point. Why? 2
ii)Graphite is a good conductor of [Link] reason
7)Elements forming ionic compounds attain noble gas electronic configuration by
either gaining or losing electrons from their valence shells. Explain giving reason why
carbon cannot attain such a configuration in this manner to form its compounds. Name
the type of bonds formed in ionic compounds and in the compounds formed by carbon.
Also explain with reason why carbon compounds are generally poor conductors of
electricity. 2
8 i)Draw the structural formula of ethyne. 3
ii)Write the names of the following compounds.
9 i)Name a cyclic unsaturated carbon [Link] write its structure.
ii)Name the following compounds : (a) CH3 – CH2 – OH 5
iii)Write the number of covalent bonds in the molecule of butane.
iv)Write any two properties of homologous series .
[Link] the following passage and answer the given questions
The compounds which have the same molecular formula but differ from each other in
physical or chemical properties are called isomers and the phenomenon is called
isomerism. When the isomerism is due to difference in the arrangement of atoms
within the molecule, without any reference to space, the phenomenon is called
structural isomerism. In other words. structural isomers are compounds that have the
same molecular formula but different structural formulas, i.e., they are different in the
order in which different atoms are linked. In these compounds, carbon atoms can be
linked together in the form of straight chains, branched chains or even rings.
i) What are isomers ? 1
ii) Write all possible structural isomers of hexane. 2
