Ray optics
1. Prove that for a concave mirror, the radius of curvature is twice the focal length for small aperture as compared to its
radius of curvature.
2. With the help of a suitable ray diagram, derive the mirror formula for a concave mirror, and obtain an expression for
linear magnification.
3. Draw a ray diagram to show the image formation by a concave mirror when the object is placed between the focus
and pole, using this diagram derive the magnification formula for the image formed.
4. Suppose the lower half of a concave mirrors reflecting surface is covered with an opaque material. What effect this
will have on the image of the object? Explain. (example 9.1)
5. A mobile phone lies along the principal axis of a concave mirror. Show with the help of a suitable diagram the
formation of its image. explain why magnification is not uniform? (example 9.2)
6. An object is placed at (i) 10 cm, (ii) 5 cm in front of a concave mirror of radius of curvature 15 cm. Find the position,
nature, and magnification of the image in each case. (example 9.3)
7. Draw a ray diagram to show image formation when the concave mirror produces a real inverted and magnified image
of the object.
8. When an object is placed between f and 2f of a concave mirror, would the image formed be i) real or virtual ii)
diminished or magnified?
9. State laws of reflection and laws of refraction.
10. Define refractive index of a transparent medium.
11. Trace the rays of light showing the formation of an image due to a point object placed on the axis of a spherical
surface separating two media of refractive index n1 and n2. Establish the relation between the distances of the
object, image and radius of curvature from the central point of the spherical surface. Hence derive lens makers
formula and thin lens formula.
12. Light from a point source in air falls on a convex spherical glass surface (n=1.5 and
R=20cm). Calculate position of the image when the light source is at 1m from the glass
surface. (example 9.6)
13. A magician during a show makes a glass lens with n = 1.47 disappear in a trough of liquid.
What is the refractive index of the liquid? Could the liquid be water? (example 9.7)
14. (i) If f = + 0.5m what is the power of the lens? (ii) The radii of curvature of the faces of a
double convex lens are 9 cm and 15 cm. Its focal length is 12 cm. What is the refractive
index of glass? (iii) A convex lens has 20 cm focal length in air. What is the focal length in
water? (Refractive index of air-water=1.33, refractive index of air-glass=1.5).
(example 9.8)
15. Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of image by the combination of two thin convex lenses in contact.
Obtain the expression for the power of this combination in terms of focal length of the lenses.
16. Find the position of image formed by an object O by the lens combination given by the figure.

(example 9.9)
17. A ray of light travelling from a denser medium of refractive index n 1 to a rarer medium of refractive index
[Link] that n2/n1=sin ic , where ic is the critical angle for the medium.
18. Explain with the help of a diagram, how the principle of total internal reflection is used for the transmission of
video signals using optical fibres.
19. What is total internal reflection? What are the necessary condition for total internal reflection to occur?
20. Draw a ray diagram to show how a right isosceles prism made of crown glass can be used
to obtain an inverted image.
21. Draw a ray diagram when incident light falls on one of two equal sides of aright angled
prism having refractive index V3
22. Draw a ray diagram showing refraction of a monochromatic light passing through a glass prism. Deduce an
expression for the refractive index of the glass in terms of angle of prism and angle of minimum deviation.
23. Write the relation between angle of incidence I, angle of prism A and angle of minimum deviation D for a
triangular prism.
24. Plot a graph showing the variation of angle of deviation as a function of angle of incidence. State the condition
under which angle of deviation is minimum.
25. What is dispersion and what is the reason for dispersion?
26. When light travels from rarer to denser medium its speed decreases, does this decrease in speed implies a decrease in
energy carried by the light wave. Justify your answer.
27. Violet light is seen at the bottom of spectrum when white light is dispersed by a prism, state the reason to explain this
observation.
28. when monochromatic light travels from one medium to another its wavelength changes but frequency remains the
same. Explain.
29. Define mafnifying power of a telescope. Write its expression
30. Draw a labelled diagram of an astronomical telescope in the near point position. Write the expression for its magnifying
power.
31. Draw a labelled diagram of an astronomical telescope for a distant object. Thus find total magnification of telescope in
normal adjustment.

33. Write two basic features which can distinct between a telescope and a microscope.
34. Draw a labelled ray diagram to show the formation of image by a compound microscope. Derive the expression
