Titration Indicators and pH Analysis

The document summarizes an experiment where two different titrations were performed - a weak acid with a strong base, and a weak base with a strong acid. Indicators were selected based on the initial and expected final pH of each titration. For the weak acid/strong base titration, phenolphthalein was used and changed color at a pH of 8.4, close to the calculated equivalence point of 8.72. For the weak base/strong acid titration, methyl red was used and changed color at a pH of 4.8, also close to the calculated equivalence point of 4.23. The document concludes that the selected indicators were appropriate for both titrations.

Abstract The purpose of this lab was to select indicators for different titrations and verify their appropriateness

with titration curves. In this experiment, we calculated the pHs of solutions created by two different titrations; a weak acid with a strong base and a weak base with a strong acid. With the calculated pHs, we selected indicators from a chart accordingly. For the weak acid titrated with the strong base, we chose phenolphthalein as our indicator. The solution started off clear with an initial pH of 3.1 and after the titration, turned bright pink with a stable pH of 11.6. For the weak base titrated with the strong acid, we chose methyl red as the indicator. The solution started off yellow with an initial pH of 9.8 and after titration, stabilized to a pH of 1.9 and remained a reddish color. Titration curves of pH versus volume of titrant were generated to verify the appropriateness of the indicators. For the first titration, according to the titration curve (graph 1), the end point occurred at a pH of 8.4, which is close to the pH of the calculated equivalence point, 8.72. For the second titration, according to the titration curve (graph 2) the end point occurred at a pH of 4.8 compared to the calculated equivalence point pH of 4.23. We concluded that the indicators we chose for both titrations were appropriate because the end point was close to the equivalent point.

Post Lab Questions 1. Graph the pH versus the volume (mL) of titrant for each of the titrations. Make sure the graph is large enough to reflect the care taken with measuring the pH and volume. Draw the best fitting smooth curve for the data. Label the equivalence point. Indicate the indicator color for each data point. Were the indicators selected appropriate for the two titrations? If not, why? For the first titration, according to the titration curve (graph 1), the end point occurred at a pH of 8.4 which is close to the pH of the calculated equivalence point, 8.72. The indicator phenolphthalein was appropriate for the titration of the weak acid with the strong base because the end point, where the color of the indicator changed, was close to the equivalence point. For the second titration, according to the titration curve (graph 2) the end point occurred at a pH of 4.8 compared to the calculated equivalence point pH of 4.23. The indicator methyl red was appropriate for the titration of the weak base with the strong acid because the end point was close to the equivalence point.
