FLUID MECHANICS WORKSHEET
1. The gage pressure of the air inww
the tank shown in Fig. below is measured to be 65 kPa.
ww
Determine the differential height h of the mercury column?
2. Freshwater and seawater flowing in parallel horizontal pipelines are connected to each
other by a double U-tube manometer, as shown in the Fig. Determine the pressure
difference between the two pipelines. Take the density of seawater at that location to be ρ
= 1035 kg/m3. Can the air column be ignored in the analysis?
3. A heavy car plunges into a lake during an accident and lands at the bottom of the lake on
its wheels. The door is 1.2 m high and 1 m wide, and the top edge of the door is 8 m below
the free surface of the water. Determine the hydrostatic force on the door and the location
of the pressure center?
4. A 4m high, 5m wide rectangular plate blocks the end of a 4m-deep freshwater channel, as
shown in the Fig. below. The plate is hinged about a horizontal axis along its upper edge
through a point A and is restrained from opening by a fixed ridge at point B. Determine the
force exerted on the plate by the ridge?
5. A crane is used to lower weights into the sea (density =1025 kg/m3) for an underwater
construction project. Determine the tension in the rope of the crane due to a rectangular
0.4m x 0.4m x 3m concrete block (density = 2300 kg/m3) when it is (a) suspended in the
air and (b) completely immersed in water?
6. A 170kg granite rock (ρ = 2700 kg/m3) is dropped into a lake. A man dives in and tries to
lift the rock. Determine how much force the man needs to apply to lift it from the bottom
of the lake. Do you think he can do it?
7. A piezometer and a Pitot tube are tapped into a horizontal water pipe, as shown in the Fig.
below to measure static and stagnation (static + dynamic) pressures. For the indicated water
column heights, determine the velocity at the center of the pipe.
8. Water flows steadily through the variable area pipe shown in the Fig. below with negligible
viscous effects. Determine the manometer reading, H, if the flowrate is 0.5 m3/s and the
density of the manometer fluid is 600 kg/m3.
9. Underground water is pumped to a sufficient height through a 10-cmdiameter pipe that
consists of a 2-m-long vertical and 1-m-long horizontal section, as shown in the Fig. below.
Water discharges to atmospheric air at an average velocity of 3 m/s, and the mass of the
horizontal pipe section when filled with water is 12 kg per meter length. The pipe is
anchored on the ground by a concrete base. Determine the bending moment acting at the
base of the pipe (point A) and the required length of the horizontal section that would make
the moment at point A zero.
