Key Vocabulary Algebraic notation…

Variable – an unknown value, represented by a letter  is the identity symbol and is used to show
Term – a single number or variable, or numbers or equivalent expressions/terms
variables multiplied or divided by each other (positive ‘4 lots of a’
or negative)
a + a + a + a  4a
Note: The number comes
before the variable.
Expression – two or more terms added and/or 4 x a  4a The number being multiplied by
subtracted the letter is called a
coefficient.
Equation – an expression that contains an equals
symbol a x a  a2
𝑎
Formula – a relationship or rule a x a x a  a3 ab 
𝑏
Like Terms - terms that have the same variables and
powers 2 x a x a x a  2a3 a x b  ab
(variables multiplied together are written in alphabetical order)
Inverse – reverse or opposite of a function

Expand – to multiply each term in the bracket by the

x2 and x3 are not
expression outside the bracket
like terms

Solving linear equations…
The aim is to get the unknown on its own.
b 4a2 4+a 8=a+4 𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2 Tip: Always show a full written method, lining up your equals
signs down the page.
𝑎 𝑎 a2 + b2 =
c 4a2 + 3a2 =𝑏 e.g 1 e.g 2
4 4 c2 Inverse of +5 is -5 Inverse of -4 is +4

𝑎 2y + 5 = 13 c
/2 - 4 = 6
−3𝑎2 𝐷
d −2 a2 + 4 = 8 S= 𝑇
4 4 2y = 13 - 5 c
/2 = 6 + 4
Inverse of x2is 2
Inverse of 2 is x2
Expanding single brackets Multiply each term inside the bracket 2y = 8 c
/2 = 10
by the term outside of the bracket.
3(2x + 4) y = 8/2 c = 10 x 2
4(y + 2) + 2(5 - y)
y=4 c = 20
3 × 2x + 3×4 4y + 8 + 10 - 2y
6x + 12 2y + 18
