Septic Tank Design Note

Summary of assumptions, formulas, calculations and references

Design inputs (from your spreadsheet)

Design population (N) = 30 persons (from spreadsheet).
Water demand = 100 L/person·day → Water supplied = 30 × 100 = 3,000 L/day.
Wastewater factor = 80% of water supplied → Wastewater = 0.8 × 3,000 = 2,400 L/day.
Hydraulic retention time (detention) used = 24 hours.
Sludge accumulation rate used = 30 L/person·year.
Desludging interval chosen = 3 years.
Net usable liquid depth (D_net) = 1.20 m; construction/excavation depth (1.25×D_net) = 1.50 m.
Length:Width ratio used = 3:1.
Step-by-step calculations & numeric results
1) Liquid volume from hydraulic detention:
Formula: V_liquid = Q_wastewater × (T_d / 24).
Numbers: V_liquid = 2,400 L/day × (24/24) = 2,400 L = 2.4 m³.
2) Sludge accumulation and storage:
Annual sludge = S × N = 30 L/p·yr × 30 = 900 L/year.
Sludge storage for 3 years = 900 × 3 = 2,700 L = 2.7 m³.
3) Total septic tank capacity:
V_total = V_liquid + V_sludge_storage = 2.4 m³ + 2.7 m³ = 5.1 m³ (5,100 L).
4) Plan area and dimensions:
Plan area: A = V_total / D_net = 5.1 m³ / 1.2 m = 4.25 m².
For L:W = 3:1 → W = sqrt(A / 3) = sqrt(4.25/3) ≈ 1.19 m; L = 3 × W ≈ 3.57 m.
5) Construction depth option:
If using construction depth 1.50 m, alternate plan area = 5.1 / 1.5 = 3.40 m² → W ≈ 1.07 m, L ≈ 3.19 m.
Recommendations & practical notes
Recommended practical choices:
- Use net depth 1.2 m and construction depth 1.5 m (allows freeboard, cover slab and pipe benching).
- If you prefer a slightly oversized/practical block-based tank, you may round up to 1.275 m × 3.825 m (this
increases capacity).
- Provide manholes for desludging, access to inlet/outlet and a baffle or two compartments for better solids
retention.
- Freeboard: allow 300–500 mm from maximum liquid level to top slab to avoid surfacing and to allow scum.
- Account for wall thickness and openings when converting internal to external dimensions.
Operational controls:
- Monitor sludge accumulation in the first year and adjust the S (L/p·yr) used for future designs if field
data differ.
- Keep records of desludging events and volumes.
Regulatory note:
- Cross-check final design and placement with local building control and Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA)
rules before construction.
