CENTRAL IDEAS Hypertension is defined when we find
values for systolic blood pressure above
of 140 mmHg and diastolic above 90 mmHg. The
borderline blood pressure is one with values
systolic between 130-139 mm Hg and diastolic between
85-89 mmHg, while we consider the pressure
systolic arterial normal < 130 mm Hg and diastolic <
85 mm Hg. Blood pressure is optimal if the pressure
systolic arterial is <120 mmHg and diastolic <80
mmHg.
In Brazil, hypertension affects more than
30 million Brazilians, of these, 36% of the
adult men and 30% of women, and it is the factor
the most important risk for development of the

and the myocardial infarction, which represent the two
major isolated causes of deaths in the country.

SUMMARY Hypertension (HTA) is one of the factors
of the most important risks for suffering
cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease and failure
renal that are other important causes of
mortality in Mexico.
The complications of hypertension are related to
directly with the magnitude of the increase of the
blood pressure and the time of evolution. The
early treatment of hypertension is important
benefits in terms of prevention of
complications, as well as a lower risk of
mortality. For this reason, the high prevalence of
this disease in Mexico is gaining more
importance if it is considered that in the year 2006,
47.8% of these adults with hypertension were found to be
the survey, that is, they had not been
diagnosed.
Among the factors that have been identified and that
various studies contribute to the onset of hypertension
age, a high sodium intake, diets
high in saturated fats, smoking,
physical inactivity and presence of diseases
chronic conditions such as obesity, dyslipidemias, and diabetes
CENTRAL IDEAS The study shows a higher prevalence of
complications in patients with hypertension that
they presented obesity.

affecting global society, due to the different
complications that present such as
nephropathy, retinopathy, diseases
cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and in general
affection in target organs.

of other risk factors associated with this
condition such as suffering from obesity, smoking, having a

To increase the percentage of hypertensive adults
with timely diagnosis, which have figures of
blood pressure under control and with less
complications, it is important: 1) to implement
programs that allow for early diagnosis and
the timely attention of the adults who are in
risk of developing hypertension.
Health information was collected,

In developed countries, adherence to

the inequities in access to healthcare.
It is suggested that more than 40% of hypertensive individuals in

The Joint National Committee states that the
