Undergraduate Students
Pradeep Kumar M.* and Dr. Haseen Taj**
AbstRACt
Social media has become one of the most important platforms to share and exchange views,
news, opinions, and ideas for people in the twenty-first century. Without it, it would be tough to
imagine simple day-to-day communication. Social Networks Sites (SNSs) are dominating all
internet users’ generations, especially the students’ communities. These websites and social
forums are way of communication directly with other people socially and in media. The purpose
of present study is to determine the effectiveness of social media networks on the social skills of
undergraduate students. For this purpose, 100 undergraduate students were selected randomly.
In order to analyze the data, independent t-Test on gain scores was used. The Findings showed
that social media usage had impacted significantly the social skills of undergraduate students.

INTRODUCTION
Social media has become one of the most important platforms to share and exchange views,
news, opinions, and ideas for people in the twenty-first century. Without it, it would be tough to imagine
simple day-to-day communication. Most people believe that using social media has decreased our
social skills because of the declining interest of face-to-face communication of youths. At the same
time, some people still applaud the achievements made in the field of easier and faster means
of communication through the inventions of social media. Therefore, there has been an ongoing
debate whether the use of social media (like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, What Sapp, etc.) have
decreased or increased our social skills.
Human beings need to socialize as they are hardwired to fellow beings. However, connecting
with others doesn’t come naturally – children need to practice at development of these skills i.e.,
social skills, that would make them socially competent adults. Lack of good social skills can make life
lonely, causing anxiety and depression. In the last two decades, advances in information technologies
have substantially altered the way humans interact using email, texting, social networking, instant
messaging, and Skype etc. People now have the resources that would make them possible to spend
days or months without coming into face-to-face with another person, yet still remain connected
with the world.

relationship between social media and social skills. (3) What can educational leaders and teachers
do to assist the student in enhancing social skills with the use of social media.
Research Hypotheses
The following hypotheses guided the study:
1. There is no significant difference in the social skills and its components (communication,
interpersonal relationship and collaborative & networking) of undergraduate male and female
students.
2. There is no significant difference in the social skills and its components (communication,
interpersonal relationship and collaborative & networking) of undergraduate students belonging
to the different age group (18 to 21 years & above 21 years).
3. There is no significant relationship between the level of usage of social media & social skills
and its components (communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills and collaborative
& networking skills) of undergraduate students.
Methodology
The present study used a survey research design and quantitative approach as the substantial
method of the study. In a quantitative method, the researcher collects, analyses and interprets different
kinds of numerical data obtained from Participants. A sample of 100 undergraduate students was
selected using stratified random sampling technique from few colleges. Data was collected using
two questionnaires, Social skill scale and social media usage questionnaire developed by Pradeep
kumar & [Link] Taj (2018).
Further the data was analysed using descriptive statistics, ‘t’ test and co-efficient of correlation.
The above table indicates that demographic profile of the respondents. Demographic profile
has been divide into 2 parts. First category into gender 52 percent of male and 48 percent of female.
Second category into age wise 46 percent of respondents are age group of 18-20 years (Younger)
and 54 percent of respondents are 21 and above age group (Older).
PART-B Impact of Social Media Usage on Social Skills and its components (communication
skills, inter personal relationship skills and collaborative & networking skills)
Hypotheses Tested
Ho: [Link] is no significant difference in the social skills and its components (communication
skills, interpersonal relationship skills and collaborative & networking skills) of undergraduate male
and female students.
The above table indicates that gender wise (male and female) mean values for communication
skills are 36.15 and 36.39, for interpersonal relationship skills 34.34 and 34.27, for collaborative
and networking skills 65.34 and 69.31 and for over all social skills 135.85 and 139.98 respectively
and‘t’ tested values are -0.122, 0.035,1.07 and -0.59 respectively. All are less than ‘t’ table value
1.96. at 95 percent level of significance. So, the null hypotheses is accepted. Therefore, there
is no significant difference in the social skills and its components (communication skills,
interpersonal relationship skills and collaborative & networking skills) of undergraduate
male and female students.
Hypotheses tested
Ho-2: There is no significant difference in the social skills and its components (communication
skills, interpersonal relationship skills and collaborative & networking skills) of undergraduate students
belonging to the different age group (18 to 21 years & above 21 years).
The above table indicates that age wise (younger and older) mean values for communication
skills are 34.78 and 37.53, for interpersonal relationship skills 32.78 and 35.61, for collaborative
and networking skills 66.00 and 68.31 and for over all social skills 133.57 and 141.46 respectively
and‘t’ tested values are -1.40, -1.39,-1.30 and -1.14 respectively. All are less than ‘t’ table value
1.96 at 95 percent level of significance. So, the null hypotheses is accepted. Therefore, there
is no significant difference in the social skills and its components (communication skills,
interpersonal relationship skills and collaborative & networking skills) of undergraduate
younger (18 to21years) and older (above21 years) students.
Hypotheses tested
Ho-3: There is no significant relationship between the level of usage of social media & social
skills and its components (communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills and collaborative
& networking skills) among undergraduate students.

are 0.455, 0.832, 0.490 and 0.975 respectively are greater than table value 0.362 at 0.05 level of
significance. Therefore the null hypothesis is rejected and alternate hypothesis has been formulated
that ‘There is a positive significant relationship between the level of usage of social media
& social skills and its components (communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills
and collaborative & networking skills)’.
2. There is no significant difference in the social skills and its components (communication
skills, interpersonal relationship skills and collaborative & networking skills) of younger and
older (18 to 21 years and above 21 years) undergraduate students.
3. There is a significant relationship between the social media usage and social skills and
its components (communication skills, interpersonal relationship skills and collaborative &
networking skills) among undergraduates’ students.
Recommendations
Based on the research findings, the following recommendations are proffered:
1. There is a need to incorporate social media usage in academic course or lesson content
in undergraduate colleges to guide the students to improve their social skills.
2. Parents and teachers should encourage the usage of social media by students to enhance
their social skills.
3. Counselling programmes should be organized for male and female undergraduate students
through social media platforms to put them on the right track on the positive usage of social
media in enhancing their social skills.
4. Social media usage is a great advantage to the students as well as teachers in meeting
the present challenge for educational institutions to cope up with their social skills at the
time of pandemic due to COVID-19.
CONCLUSION
If social media is used meaningfully and communicating via cyberspace, social media can
promote communication skills, interpersonal skills, collaborative & networking skills. It can also help
young people become more socialize with their peers. Finally, if we encourage the use of social
media by teachers in the classroom, and allow interaction through social media platforms, it will
promote social interaction among undergraduate students and improve social skills among them.
