Lived Experiences of Senior High School Students in

Online Learning: A Phenomenological Study

CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM AND ITS

BACKGROUND

Introduction
The COVID-19 pandemic forced schools worldwide to shift to online learning. While this change
ensured continuity of education, it posed challenges for students, such as lack of motivation, poor
engagement, and emotional stress. Understanding students’ experiences in online learning is essential
for improving teaching strategies and student support systems.

Background of the Study

Online learning has become a primary mode of education during crises. However, students often face
technical difficulties, lack of peer interaction, and challenges in managing time and motivation. By
examining students’ lived experiences, educators can develop better practices to enhance online
learning.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to answer the following questions:
1. How do senior high school students describe their experiences in online learning?
2. What challenges do students encounter in online classes?
3. What coping strategies do students use to overcome these challenges?

Objectives of the Study

• Describe the experiences of students in online learning.
• Identify challenges faced during online learning.
• Explore coping strategies employed by students.

Significance of the Study

• Students: Gain insights into shared experiences and coping strategies.
• Teachers: Improve online instruction methods.
• School Administrators: Guide policy decisions on online education.
• Future Researchers: Serve as reference for similar studies.

Scope and Delimitation

The study focuses on ten senior high school students at ABC University during the 2024–2025 school
year. It does not include elementary or college students and is limited to experiences, challenges, and
coping strategies.

Definition of Terms
Online Learning: Education delivered via platforms like Zoom and Google Classroom.
Lived Experience: Personal understanding of a phenomenon.
Phenomenology: Research approach studying individuals’ lived experiences.

CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

AND STUDIES

Conceptual Literature
Online learning offers flexibility and accessibility (Moore, 2018) but also challenges such as digital
fatigue, distraction, and lack of interaction (Dhawan, 2020). Emotional and social support is critical for
maintaining motivation.

Empirical Literature
• Basilaia and Kvavadze (2020): Students experienced anxiety and technical problems.
• Adedoyin & Soykan (2020): Internet issues and limited feedback reduced satisfaction.
• Garrison (2021): Online learning improves independence when well-supported.

Synthesis
Previous studies focus on academic outcomes and technology, but few explore students’ lived
experiences. This study fills that gap by examining their real-life experiences, challenges, and coping
strategies.

CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design
Phenomenological qualitative research, focusing on students’ lived experiences.

Research Locale
ABC University, Metro City, during the 2024–2025 academic year.

Participants and Sampling

Ten senior high school students selected via purposive sampling. Inclusion: at least one semester of
online learning experience.

Data Gathering Procedure

Semi-structured interviews conducted via Zoom. Each interview lasted 30–45 minutes. Transcripts
were verified by participants for accuracy.

Data Analysis Procedure

Thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006):
1. Familiarization with data
2. Coding
3. Identifying themes
4. Reviewing and defining themes
5. Reporting findings

Trustworthiness
• Credibility: Member checking
• Transferability: Detailed context and participant descriptions
• Dependability: Audit trail
• Confirmability: Reflexive journaling

Ethical Considerations
Informed consent obtained; confidentiality maintained; voluntary participation ensured.

CHAPTER 4: PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND

INTERPRETATION OF DATA
Theme 1: Adapting to Technology
Participants reported initial difficulty navigating online platforms, such as Zoom and Google Classroom.
One student said, “It was confusing at first, and I kept missing deadlines.”

Theme 2: Managing Motivation

Students struggled to maintain focus without face-to-face classes. Many used personal schedules and
reminders to stay on track.

Theme 3: Coping with Isolation

Students experienced loneliness due to lack of peer interaction. Some joined online study groups or
communicated with classmates via social media to cope.

Interpretation
These themes indicate that while online learning offers flexibility, students need support to manage
technology, maintain motivation, and sustain social interaction.
CHAPTER 5: SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND
RECOMMENDATIONS
Summary of Findings
• Students faced challenges adapting to technology.
• Motivation was difficult to maintain without classroom structure.
• Social isolation affected emotional well-being.
• Coping strategies included schedules, study groups, and peer communication.

Conclusions
Online learning is both beneficial and challenging. Emotional, technological, and social factors influence
students’ experiences significantly.

Recommendations
• Teachers: Integrate interactive activities and timely feedback.
• Schools: Provide technical support and mental health resources.
• Students: Use study groups and time management strategies.
• Future Research: Investigate long-term impacts of online learning on students’ development.

Common questions

Recommendations include integrating interactive activities into the curriculum to enhance engagement, providing robust technical support, offering mental health resources to address emotional challenges, and fostering a supportive online community through study groups and peer interaction. These recommendations aim to improve the overall effectiveness and satisfaction of students in online learning settings .

Online learning can promote independence by requiring students to manage their own time and learning environment. This independence is most effectively realized when students receive adequate support, such as timely feedback, interactive activities, and resources tailored to foster self-regulation and motivation. Without this support, students may struggle to maintain the discipline necessary to study effectively .

Students' coping strategies, such as creating schedules and joining study groups, demonstrate resilience and adaptability to technological changes. Prior experience plays a crucial role; students with more familiarity with digital tools tend to adapt faster and devise more effective strategies to manage their learning, highlighting the importance of digital literacy in enhancing student adaptability .

The pandemic's shift to online learning is likely to influence future education by emphasizing the need for flexibility, digital literacy, and emotional support systems. Policies may increasingly incorporate hybrid models, blend interactive digital tools with traditional methods, and prioritize mental health resources. These changes reflect a more holistic approach to education, accommodating diverse learning styles and environments .

The absence of face-to-face interaction can significantly decrease motivation and engagement, as students miss the immediate feedback and dynamic interaction typical of traditional classrooms. Measures to enhance these aspects include incorporating interactive activities, ensuring regular instructor feedback, and fostering a sense of community through collaborative online tasks and group discussions .

Technological challenges, such as navigating platforms like Zoom and Google Classroom, initially confuse students, leading to issues like missed deadlines. These challenges can hinder students' overall learning experiences. Educators can mitigate these challenges by providing clear instructions, conducting initial training sessions, and offering ongoing tech support to ensure students are comfortable and capable of using online tools effectively .

This study addresses gaps in research by focusing on students' lived experiences rather than just academic outcomes or technological aspects. It contributes to the academic field by providing detailed insights into students' emotional, social, and cognitive experiences during online learning, which can inform the development of more comprehensive educational strategies and support systems .

Peer interaction serves as a critical component in alleviating feelings of loneliness and isolation by providing a sense of community and belonging. According to the study, students manage isolation by forming online study groups and maintaining communication through social media, which helps sustain their emotional well-being and motivation .

A phenomenological study focuses on describing the lived experiences of individuals, providing deep insights into students' personal challenges, coping strategies, and emotional responses encountered during online learning. This approach allows researchers to capture the nuanced realities of students, which quantitative methods might overlook, thus enabling educators to develop better practices that address specific student needs .

Primary challenges include managing motivation and coping with isolation due to the lack of peer interaction. Students reported difficulty maintaining focus without face-to-face classes, affecting their emotional well-being. To cope with these challenges, students used strategies such as creating personal schedules, setting reminders, joining online study groups, and communicating with peers via social media .
