Vickers Hardness Testing Procedure Guide

This document describes the procedure for conducting a Vickers hardness test. First, the objectives and theoretical framework are presented, including a description of the Vickers apparatus and method. Then, the materials, equipment, and procedure for carrying out the test are detailed. Finally, the results obtained from measuring the hardness of various metals using the Vickers formula are shown.

OBJECTIVES
Classify the type of indentator required for this essay.
We can find the hardness using the formula, so that we know that
They mean each of their variables
Know how to calibrate a durometer to use Vickers hardness

II. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

A. VICKERS TESTING MACHINE

B. VICKERS HARDNESS TEST

The ASTM E 92-82 standard defines Vickers hardness as a method of
indentation test by which, using a calibrated machine,
a pyramid indentor with a square base is forced that has an angle
between specific faces, under a predetermined load, against the surface
of the material to be tested and the resulting diagonal is measured
printing after removing the load.

The magnitude of HV is an average conventional stress in the area of
contact of the indentor, sample and usually characterizes the resistance of the
material to considerable plastic deformation. Based on this:

A: Area of the footprint left on the base material.

Since the value of angle α is constant and equal to 136°, in practice

the following work formula is used expressed in terms of the diagonal
of the footprint.

Where:
it is the arithmetic mean of the diagonals d1 and d2, expressed in mm.
Applied force, expressed in Kgf.

The standard method is carried out under the following conditions:

Diamond Pyramid Indenter α = 136°

Load (P): 1...120 kgf
Loading duration (t): 10 ... 15 s

The Vickers hardness number is denoted as HV. Examples:

440 HV 30
This notation indicates a Vickers hardness of 440 under a load of 30 kgf.
Applied for a period of 10 to 15 seconds.

440 HV 30/20
This notation indicates a Vickers hardness of 440 under a load of 30 kgf.
Applied for a duration of 20 s.

IV. PROCEDURE
To begin with, we work with the same samples that we use for the
Rockwell hardness test (aluminum 1020, aluminum 1045, bronze)

Therefore, we apply the same steps as the previous hardness test,

First, we sand the samples with special metal sandpaper N100.
Then we sand with 4 different types of water sandpaper (220, 400, 600,
1000)
When the test tube is ready, we prepare and calibrate the durometer for the
Vickers hardness and we placed the load that was indicated to us in class, for each
metal.

When using the durometer, we will observe that it leaves tiny marks everywhere.
metals, and we will proceed to measure the diagonals of these.
With the obtained data, we will use the Vickers hardness formula to
proceed with the results.

V. ANALYSIS RESULT
This essay allows us to observe a footprint with 4 vertices, in the shape of a diamond.
in such a way that, taking measurements from one side to the other, with the help of a sight
5X, we use the formula indicated, and we note that the hardness test
Vickers is indirect.

VI. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
In this practice we concluded that the mark left by the diamond tip marker
pyramidal varies in proportion to the application of the load and the length of the
diagonal of the square of the print.
The size of the mark made by the marker depends on the hardness of the material.
that is to say, a larger footprint means lower hardness, while a smaller footprint means higher hardness, which
It has been widely demonstrated with the tests carried out in this practice.
Another conclusion was that the time (in this case 15 seconds) and the load
application influence the diameter of the footprint, which is why it is necessary to have
a data table for the type of material to be used.

VIII. ANNEXES AND ASSIGNED ACTIVITIES

In what cases will the Vickers hardness test be used?

This test applies to the same materials as the Rockwell hardness tests.
and the superficial Rockwell, except where more accuracy or less is required
penetration, as in:

Thin cemented parts, from 0.005 to 0.010 inches.

Thin materials, up to 0.005 inches.

Fine finish parts, in order to avoid a removal operation.

Thin sections, such as pipes.

Weak structures

What are the main differences between the Vickers test and the test?
Rockwell?
Its main difference lies in its origin, in how they are measured. While the essay of
Rockwell hardness uses a cone-shaped tip made of diamond; the
The Vickers hardness test uses a pyramidal diamond tip.

A piece is subjected to a hardness test using the Vickers method.
Knowing that the load used is 500N and that a footprint is obtained which
the diagonal is 322 um, calculate the Vickers hardness of the piece.
