Exploring Pascal's Triangle
Name: Hujaif
Class: 12th A
Roll No.: ..........
1. Definition
Pascal Triangle is a triangular arrangement of numbers where each number is the sum of the two
numbers directly above it. It represents binomial coefficients and shows various mathematical
patterns.
2. History
Pascal Triangle is named after Blaise Pascal, a French mathematician. However, it was known
earlier to Chinese mathematician Jia Xian and Persian mathematician Omar Khayyam. Pascal
studied its properties in detail, giving it popularity.
3. How to Construct Pascal Triangle (Up to 10 Rows)
1. Write 1 at the top.
2. Each row starts and ends with 1.
3. Middle numbers are formed by adding the two numbers above them.
Rows up to 10:
0: 1
1: 1 1
2: 1 2 1
3: 1 3 3 1
4: 1 4 6 4 1
5: 1 5 10 10 5 1
6: 1 6 15 20 15 6 1
7: 1 7 21 35 35 21 7 1
8: 1 8 28 56 70 56 28 8 1
9: 1 9 36 84 126 126 84 36 9 1
10: 1 10 45 120 210 252 210 120 45 10 1
4. Properties of Pascal Triangle
(a) The sum of numbers in any row is 2^n.
(b) Rows with prime numbers have elements divisible by that prime.
(c) Hockey-stick pattern shows diagonal sums forming the next number.
(d) Fibonacci sequence appears in diagonal sums.
5. Model Idea
Create a colorful chart showing 10 rows, highlight diagonals, prime rows, and patterns.
