Instruction for candidates:
Section A is compulsory. It consists of 10 parts of two marks each.
2. Section B consist of 5 questions of 5 marks each. The student has to attempt any 4
questions out of it.
3. Section C consist of 3 questions of 10 marks cach. The student has to attempt any 2
questions.
Section -A (2 marks each)
Q1. Attempt the following:
a) Determine the specific gravity of a fluid having viscosity 0.05 poise and kinematic
viscosity 0.035 stokes.
b) What do you mean by vacuum pressure?
c) What do you understand by "Total pressure' and 'Centre of pressure ?
d) Define the terms 'buoyancy' and 'centre of buoyancy'.
e) What do you understand by 'convective acceleration' and 'Local acceleration?
t) Define moment of momentum equation. Where this equation is used?
g) Explain the term, 'dimensionally homogeneous equation".
h) Define the terms: drag and lift.
i) Explain the terms: path line, streak line and stream line.
j) What are the conditions for flow to be irrotational
Section - B (5 marks each)
Q2. Why does the viscosity of a gas increases with the increase in temperature while that of a
liquid decrease with increase in temperature?
Q3. A pipe contains an oil of sp. gr. 0.8. A differential manometer connected at two points A
and B of the pipe shows a difference in mercury level as 20 em. Find the difference of
pressure at two points.
Q4. Derive an expression for the time period of the oscillation of a floating body in terms of
radius of gyration and meta-centric height of the floating body.
Q5. What is meant by geometric, kinematic and dynamic similarities? Are these similarities
truly attainable? If not why?
Q6. Find the drag force difference on a flat plate of size 1.5*1.5 m when the plate is moving at
a speed of Sm/s normal to its plate first in water and second in air of density 1.24kg/m*.
Co-cflicient of drag is given as I.10.
Section-C (10 marks each)
Q7. Water flows through a pipe AB 1.2 m diameter at 3m/s and then passes through a pipe BC
I.5 m diameter. At C, the pipe branches. Branch CD is 0.8m in diameter and carries one-
third of the flow in AB. The flow velocity in branch CE is 2.5m/s. Find the volume rate of
flow in AB, the velocity in BC, the velocity in CD and the diameter of CE.
Q8. State Buckingham's T-theorem. Why this theorem is considered superior over the
Rayleigh's method for dimensional analysis?
Q9. 250 litres/sec of water is flowing in a pipe having a diameter of 300mm. If the pipe is
bent by 135. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force on the bend. The
pressure of water flowing is 39.24 N/cm*.
