Structural Irregularities in Buildings

The document presents different types of structural irregularities that can occur in buildings, both in height and in plan. It describes irregularities in stiffness, strength, mass, vertical geometry, discontinuity in load-bearing systems, torsion, and in the diaphragms. Additionally, it includes an example of calculation to verify a possible stiffness irregularity between floors.

Rigidity Irregularity – Soft Floor

There is rigidity irregularity when, in
any of the analysis directions, the
the distortion of the floor (drift) is greater than
1.4 times the corresponding value in the
immediate upper floor, or is greater than
1.25 times the average of the distortions of
intermediate floor in the three upper levels
adjacent. The distortion of the floor is

at the ends of the mezzanine.
Resistance Irregularities - Weak Floor
There is resistance irregularity when, in
any of the directions of analysis, the
resistance of a mezzanine against forces
cutting is less than 80% of the resistance
of the immediate upper mezzanine.
Safety factor 0.75.

Extreme Rigidity Irregularity

It is considered that there is extreme irregularity
in the stiffness when, in any of the
directions of analysis, the distortion of
the intermediate floor (derivative) is greater than 1.6 times the

superior, or is greater than 1.4 times the
average of the inter-floor distortions in
the three adjacent upper levels. The
floor distortion will be calculated as the
average of the distortions at the ends
of the mezzanine.
Extreme Irregularity of Resistance
There is extreme irregularity of resistance
when, in any of the directions of
analysis, the resistance of a mezzanine against
shear forces are less than 65% of the
resistance of the immediate upper floor.
Safety factor 0.50.
Mass or Weight Irregularity
There is mass (or weight) irregularity
when the weight of a floor, determined according to

neither on rooftops nor in basements.

Safety factor 0.90.

Vertical Geometric Irregularity

The configuration is irregular when, in
any of the directions of analysis, the
floor plan dimension of the structure
lateral load resistance is greater than 1.3
sometimes the corresponding dimension in a
adjacent floor. This criterion does not apply in
rooftops
not in basements.
Safety factor 0.90.

Discontinuity in the Resilient Systems

The structure is classified as irregular

Extreme discontinuity of the Systems

Resistant
There is extreme discontinuity when the

total.
Safety factor 0.60.

Torsional Irregularity
There is torsional irregularity when, in
any of the analysis directions, the
maximum relative displacement of the floor in
one end of the building, calculated including
accidental eccentricity (Δmaxis greater than 1.2
sometimes the relative displacement of the center of
masses of the same intermediate floor for the same

the maximum relative displacement of the floor

Safety factor 0.75.
Extreme Torsional Irregularity
There is extreme torsional irregularity when, in
any of the analysis directions, the
maximum relative displacement of the floor
one end of the building, calculated including
accidental eccentricity (ΔCM), it is greater than 1.5
sometimes the relative displacement of the center of

the maximum relative displacement of the floor

Safety factor 0.60.

Recessed Corners
The structure is classified as irregular when
inner corners whose dimensions in
both directions are greater than 20% of the
corresponding total dimension on the floor.
Safety factor 0.90.
Discontinuity of the Diaphragm
The structure is classified as irregular when
the diaphragms have abrupt discontinuities
or significant variations in stiffness, including
openings greater than 50% of the gross area of
diaphragm. There is also irregularity when,
in any of the floors and for any of the
analysis directions, is there any section
transversal of the diaphragm with a net area
resistant less than 25% of the section area
total transversal in the same direction calculated
with the total dimensions of the plant.
Safety factor 0.85.

Non-Parallel Systems
It is considered that there is irregularity when
in any of the analysis directions the
elements resistant to lateral forces are not
parallels. Does not apply if the axes of the porches or
walls form angles less than 30° nor
when the non-parallel elements resist
less than 10% of the shear force of the floor.
Safety factor 0.90.
