CODING STANDARD
MATERIAL
AISI / SAE coding
AISI (The American Iron and Steel Institute)
and SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers)
creating a coding standard for materials
a down payment consisting of four digits
explaining about the chemical composition of steel
The AISI has a coding that
similar to SAE but adding
letters to indicate the process
creation.
The first number indicates the type of fertilizer.
The number 1 for carbon steel = 1xxx
2. The number 2 for carbon steel with nickel alloy = 2xxx
3. Number 3 for carbon steel with nickel and chromium alloy =
3xxx
4. The number 4 for carbon steel with molybdenum alloy = 4xxx
The second number indicates the alloy content.
Low carbon Low alloy steel
✘ Low carbon does not contain ✘ Low manganese (1.75 Mn) 13xx
sulfur (S) 10 xx ✘ Low nickel:
✘ Low carbon contains S (free - 3.50 Ni 23xx
machining) 11xx
- 5.00 Ni 25xx
✘ Low carbon contains S and P
12xx ✘ Low nickel-chromium
1.25 Ni; 0.65 Cr 31xx
3.50 Ni; 1.55 Cr 33xx
✘ Low molybdenum (0.25 Mo) 40xx
✘ Low chromium molybdenum (0.50–0.85 Cr; 0.12–0.20 Mo) 41xx
✘ Low nickel molybdenum ✘ Low chromium carbon (0.50; 1.00–1.45 Cr–
1.55–1.80, 0.20–0.25 Mo 46xx 1.00 c) 5xxxx
3.50 Ni, 0.25 Mo 48xx ✘ Low chromium vanadium (0.80; 0.95 Cr; 0.10;
1.15 Va) 61xx
✘ Low chrome nickel molybdenum
1.80 Ni; 0.50; 0.80 Cr; 0.25 Mo 43xx
✘ Low manganese silicon (0.85 Mn; 2.00 Si)
92xx
- 1,05 Ni; 0,45 Cr; 0,20 Mo 47xx
- 0,55 Ni; 0,50; -0,65 Cr; 0,20 Mo 86xx
- 0.55 Ni; 0.50 Cr; 0.25 Mo 87xx
- 3,25 Ni; 1,20 Cr; 0,12 Mo 93xx
- 1,00 Ni; 0,80 Cr; 0,25 98xx
✘ Low chrom
- 0.28–0.40 Cr 50xx
- 0.80; 0.90; 0.95; 1.00–1.50 Cr 51xx
The last two digits indicate the percentage of carbon.
Example of reading:
✘ AISI–SAE 1095 is a carbon steel with a content of
carbon of 0.95%
✘ AISI–SAE 3395 is a carbon steel with a nickel alloy.
chrome, with a mixture of nickel approximately 3.5%, chrome approximately
a ratio of 1.55% and a carbon content of 0.95%.
The use of letters in front
✘ Letter A for carbon steel produced from Siemens furnace
Martin
✘ The letter B for carbon steel produced from the furnace
Bessemer
✘ Letter C for carbon steel produced from the Open hearth.
Heart for low-carbon steel
✘ Letter D for carbon steel produced from the Open hearth.
Heart for carbon steel acid
✘ Letter E for carbon steel produced from electric furnace
UNS (Unified Coding
Numbering System
When in the AISI / SAE system Axxxxx: A for Aluminium
the numbering consists of 4 digits,
Cxxxxx: C for Copper or
UNS uses 6 digits Copper Alloy
to describe metal
good from the chemical composition
Fxxxxx : F for cast iron
manufacturing process, and Gxxxxx: G for carbon steel
thermal treatment. Nxxxxx : N for nickel
The first digit consists of letters. Sxxxxx: S for stainless steel
indicating the type of metal, namelyWxxxxx : W for welding filler
: Zxxxxx : Z for zinc
Second digit to digit Example UNS: G10450
the fifth is an adaptation of G shows steel
AISI / SAE numbering system. carbon ( carbon steel )
While the last digit
1045 plain carbon steel

with content
for the treatment process
carbon 0.45%
heat, or for the process
manufacture. 0 additional information

American Society for Testing Materials
American Society for Testing Materials
or commonly known as ASTM is based
in the United States, is an organization
international volunteerism that develops
standardization of techniques for materials, products, systems
and services.
ASTM standards consist of letters followed by
by number, this naming generally refers to
on certain steel products.
ASTM A 582/A 582M-95b (2000) Grade 303Se
Example: A Ferrous Metal, but does not indicate whether it is cast
iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, tool steel, or stainless steel
582 The sequence of numbers that have no relation
with metallic properties
•M Metric (Indicating that this standard follows S
Unit)
95 = Year adopted or last revised, letter b
showing the third revision
2000 The last year this standard was approved in
international standards committee meeting
Grade 303 = Low grade, where it indicates an addition
unsurSelenium
