Know the ways of measuring brake power and have a relative reference of the
instruments to be used
II.-INTRODUCTION
III.-THEORETICAL FOUNDATION
Brake Power
The term 'brake power' derives from the fact that in the early determinations, the production of
energy produced by a motor on its axis was dissipated or absorbed by the friction of a brake
It is the power that the engine can provide at the output of the crankshaft, that is, the one we would have
available to move a machine if it is directly coupled to the crankshaft. It is smaller than the
indicated, since the engine itself consumes power in the friction of the piston and to move its
own organs and auxiliary systems, such as the fan, alternator, various pumps, etc.
The working principle of the Prony brake for measurement is [Link] the
axis of theenginesof internal combustion, the equation is deduced to calculate such power in
HP, starting from thedatafound when carrying out the operation for that measurement. They

Thermodynamics, Internal Combustion Engines, and Metrology.

Record the values logged using the tachometer on the electric motor or turbine shaft
W = force (Kg)
N= RPM

VI.- CONCLUSIONS
It is observed that the load of force is decreasing just like the revolutions because of the
force used to brake the axle increases
It is observed that this brake is difficult to adjust and it is complicated to maintain a load

VIII.- QUESTIONNAIRE
The Prony brake is a simple device invented by Gaspard de Prony to measure torque.
torque produced by an engine. The term 'brake horsepower' is a measure of the
power derived from this method of torque measurement.
Essentially, the measurement is done by wrapping a cord or strap around the output shaft.
of the motor and the measurement of the force transferred to the belt through friction. Friction is
tighten the belt until the rotation frequency of the axis decreases. In the
practice more engine power below, it can be applied until the limit is reached
motor.
3.- How can the brake horsepower of an internal combustion engine be measured?
To find the maximum power that the engine can develop at the speed ofessay, se
gradually increase the load, simultaneously increasing the throttle opening
accelerator to maintain engine speed. When the throttle is fully open, it
it obtains the maximum power. Any increase in load would cause the motor speed to
consequently, the power developed by the decreases; then to determine the power one
you can use the equation.
T = Motor torque produced by the engine, in lb.-in. (Data provided by the Prony brake)
N = Angular speed of the motor in rpm (data provided by a tachometer connected to the
