UNIT 1: Introduction to Structural Dynamics
1. Define the fundamental objective of Dynamic Analysis. Explain the differences between a SDOF and
MDOF system with examples.
2. Derive the governing differential equation of motion for a general SDOF system using:
(a) D’Alembert’s Principle
(b) Lagrange’s Method / Principle of Virtual Work
3. Differentiate between Free Vibration, Harmonic Excitation, Impulsive Loading, and Earthquake
Loading.
UNIT 2: Theory of Vibrations
1. Derive the expression for Logarithmic Decrement (δ). Prove the ratio of successive amplitudes is
constant and show relation between δ and damping ratio ζ.
2. Define Critical Damping Coefficient and Damping Ratio. Derive EOM for damped free vibration and
explain underdamped, critical, overdamped cases.
3. Derive the harmonic forced vibration solution u_p(t) for P(t)=P0 sin(ωt). Derive the Dynamic
Magnification Factor (DMF).
4. Plot/Explain DMF vs frequency ratio and discuss Resonance, Bandwidth, damping effects.
UNIT 3: Transient Response of SDOF
1. Derive Duhamel’s Integral from first principles using unit impulse response.
2. Using Duhamel’s Integral, compute response u(t) for an undamped SDOF system subjected to a
rectangular pulse P0 (0 ≤ t ≤ t_d).
3. Define Impulse Load, Step Load, Response Spectrum and explain seismic applications.
UNIT 4: Multi Degree of Freedom System
1. Formulate M and K matrices for a multi■story shear frame. Solve eigenvalue problem to find natural
frequencies and mode shapes.
2. Prove orthogonality of mode shapes with respect to M and K matrices.
3. Explain Normal Coordinates and Modal Superposition; show how they decouple MDOF equations.
UNIT 5: Continuous Systems
