* Rapid economic growth and industrialization has led to reckless exploitation of natural resources.
* There is fear of complete exhaustion of these natural resources.
*In the process of economic growth, damage is being caused to environment and ecology which ultimately will create
issues for human beings.
Measures to ensure sustainable development:
(i) We should focus on using renewable resources and keep inventing new techniques to decrease the use of
conventional resources.
(ii) The present resources must be used judiciously, with planning, and over exploitation should be avoided.

8. Why do we use averages? Are there any limitations to their use? Illustrate with your own
examples related to development.
Ans: Averages are useful for comparing different quantities of the same category.
LIMITATIONS :
• They hide disparities and are not specific.
• When we calculate the per capita income of the country which is also the average income, it
does not tell how the income is distributed amongst the people of the country.
1. The defect of average as a measure is that it does not show the distribution (dispersion) of income
between the rich and the poor.
2. Two countries may have the same average income but in one country almost every family may
enjoy the same kind of income, whereas in the other, some may be very rich and others very poor.
The disparity between rich and poor is an important feature that the average income measure (per
capita income) does not consider.
Example: In terms of development, we can take the example of India, where the metro towns are
full of high-rise buildings and shopping malls while some villages have not yet been provided with
a basic necessity like electricity.
