MODULE 1: INTRODUCTION TO IE & ITS TOOLS
The History of IE

• IE can be traced back to the start of the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century.

• Charles Babbage in early 1800’ carefully measured the cost of performing each operation as well as the time
per operation.

• Frederick W. Taylor introduced time & motion study

• Frank B. Gilbreth extended Taylor’s work considerably. His primary contribution was the identification,
analysis and measurement of fundamental motions involved in performing work

• Effective material flow

• Production Target
• Incentive plans,
• Factory layout problems,
• Material handling problems, and
• Principles of organization
And our Apparel Industry is still suffering these in 2100 century.

What is IE
According to American institute of industrial engineering (AIIE) -Concerned with the design, improvement and
installation of integrated system of people, material, equipment and energy”

OBJECTIVES OF INDUSTRIALS ENGINEERING

The prime objective are
 Increase the productivity/
 Eliminating, removing or minimizing the waste/cost
 Increase operational effectiveness.

Scope of IE
o Study , measure & improve the way individual’s perform their jobs.
o Design & install a better system of coordinating the jobs assigned to individual into a group
effort
o Specify, predict & evaluate result obtained

A LOGICAL WAY OF IE WORKS

• The time required to do it.
• The way to measure results

OHS
OHS means Occupational Health & Safety. OH&S can help take the guesswork out of workplace safety and
health by providing information.
IMPORTANCE OHS PRACTICE AT WORKPLACE
• Safe workplace
• Better place to work
• Fewer injuries
• Employee have more satisfaction
• People will come back quickly after an accident
• People will produce quality products

What Hazard?
A hazard is a source of potential harm or any situation that has the potential to cause or lead to harm. This can
be harm to people or property damage.

Type of Hazard
 PHYSICAL HAZARDS: Physical Hazards include unsafe machines and environmental conditions.
EXAMPLES are unguarded machine parts like saw blades, constant noise, or prolonged exposure to sun or
cold.
 BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS: Biological Hazards are produced by living things. They often come from
working with animals and people.
EXAMPLES include blood, viruses and animal and bird droppings.
 CHEMICAL HAZARDS: Chemical Hazards include materials that are flammable, explosive or
poisonous.
EXAMPLES are cleaning products, pesticides and gasoline.
 ERGONOMIC HAZARDS: Ergonomic Hazards are caused by poorly designed workplaces or
processes.
EXAMPLES are poor lighting, workstations that are too high or low for you or a job that requires you to repeat
the same movements over and over.

EMPLOYERS ROLE
 Establish a health and safety policy and program
 Provide required training
 Provide the information, instruction and supervision you need to do your job safely
 Make sure you have necessary safety equipment
 Provide information on hazards in the workplace
Employee Role:
 obey the law
 use machines and equipment safely
 Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
 report hazards to your boss
 Work safely and don't fool around
HAZARD CONTROLLED METHOD
 Spot the hazard
 Assess the hazard
 Fix the hazard
 Evaluate the results

Lean philosophy fosters optimization in the apparel industry by emphasizing waste elimination and process efficiency, contributing to improved productivity and reduced costs . Techniques like Kaizen and PDCA are integral to this philosophy, promoting continuous improvement and system efficiency in various sections through regular assessment and enhancement of production processes . These strategies ensure a systematic approach to problem-solving, which enhances operational capabilities across the industry .

Measurement plays a critical role in industrial engineering by providing the data needed to manage and optimize processes effectively . Accurate measurement facilitates effective management by enabling precise evaluation of operational efficiency, identification of waste areas, and informed decision-making, all of which are essential for enhancing productivity and competitiveness in the apparel sector .

The readymade garment industry in Bangladesh faces challenges such as rising labor costs, worker unrest, lack of skilled manpower, power and energy shortages, and infrastructural problems . These challenges impact global competitiveness by potentially increasing production costs, causing production delays, and decreasing the overall reliability of Bangladesh as a sourcing destination, all of which could lead international buyers to seek alternatives .

Hazard control involves spotting hazards, assessing their risks, fixing them, and evaluating results . In the apparel industry, this process can be applied by ensuring safe machine operations, implementing regular safety audits, training employees on hazard recognition, and using correct personal protective equipment . Effective application reduces accidents, improves safety culture, and enhances overall workplace efficiency .

The RMG industry in Bangladesh began to develop after liberation with the establishment of tailoring shops like Reaz Store, which later evolved into garment factories . Key milestones include the founding of Desh Garments, the establishment of BGMEA, and the industry's growth to 5,700 factories exporting goods worth 28 billion USD as of FY 2016 . The industry plays a crucial role in the national economy, earning about 80% of foreign currency, with approximately 4 million people directly employed, predominantly women .

The primary objectives of industrial engineering, particularly within the apparel industry, include increasing productivity, eliminating or minimizing waste/cost, and increasing operational effectiveness . These objectives are significant because they help optimize resource utilization, decrease manufacturing costs, enhance efficiency, and improve overall production quality, all of which are critical to maintaining competitive advantage in the global market .

The integration of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices in the apparel industry benefits the workplace by creating a safer and better working environment, reducing injury rates, enhancing employee satisfaction, and ensuring compliance with legal requirements . This results in a more motivated workforce, less downtime due to accidents, and potential improvements in product quality due to a healthier, more engaged workforce .

Line balancing contributes to manufacturing efficiency by ensuring that each stage of production has an evenly distributed workload, minimizing idle time and bottlenecks . It involves organizing production processes so that each step is synchronized, enhancing workflow smoothness and allowing for the optimization of labor and machinery resources, critical in maintaining high productivity levels and meeting production targets .

Ergonomic considerations reduce workplace-related injuries by designing workstations and tools to fit workers, thereby minimizing awkward postures, repetitive movements, and static positions that can lead to musculoskeletal disorders . Adjustments like ergonomic tools and adaptable workstations reduce strain and improve comfort, thereby lowering the incidence of repetitive strain injuries and enhancing overall worker productivity and health .

The historical context of industrial engineering, established with principles from the Industrial Revolution and figures like Taylor and Gilbreth, informs current practices in the apparel industry by embedding techniques such as time and motion studies, effective material flow, and organizational principles . These foundational elements continue to underpin contemporary practices like production target setting and incentive planning, driving efficiency and productivity improvements in modern apparel manufacturing .
