Part 1: Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly central to business competitiveness worldwide. It

encompasses advanced technologies like large language models (LLMs), agentic AI, machine
learning, and automation systems that empower companies to optimize operational processes,
improve decision-making, and enhance customer experiences. AI enables firms to analyze vast data
volumes better, predict trends, automate routine tasks, and innovate effectively. The motivation for
choosing this topic stems from its profound impact across industries and its relevance to my
professional aspirations as a chemical engineer interested in how AI can improve efficiency and
innovation in the semiconductor sector. Additionally, exploring AI applications aligns with my goal to
integrate AI tools like LLMs into work and study practices for greater productivity and insight
(Infosys, 2025; Pypestream, 2025).

Part 2: Challenges, Trends, Company Examples

(a) Challenges and Trends
Despite AI’s advantages, several challenges impede its widespread adoption. Key issues include data
privacy and security risks, as AI systems handle sensitive information susceptible to breaches
(McKinsey, 2025). Integrating AI with legacy IT infrastructure can be technically complex, requiring
substantial investments. There is also a critical shortage of AI talent capable of designing, deploying,
and managing AI technologies responsibly (Bernard Marr, 2021). Ethical dilemmas such as
algorithmic bias and transparency demand attention to avoid unfair outcomes and regulatory risks
(TalentSprint, 2025).
Meanwhile, AI technology trends continue evolving rapidly. Generative AI models, such as GPT-
based LLMs, are revolutionizing content generation and customer interaction automation (Coursera,
2025). Agentic AI systems are enhancing workflow automation by making autonomous decisions
within defined boundaries, reducing human intervention in routine tasks (Infosys, 2025). Predictive
analytics, powered by AI, is increasingly used for anticipating market demands and personalizing
marketing strategies, thereby improving competitiveness.
(b) Company Examples
 In the healthcare sector, companies leverage AI for diagnostic imaging, patient outcome
prediction, and drug discovery. This reduces errors and accelerates treatment plans (Business
FIU, 2024).
 The retail sector, including firms like Bigbasket in India, uses AI for inventory management
optimization, demand forecasting, and targeted marketing to improve customer satisfaction
and operational efficiency (Talentsprint, 2025).
 Banks such as HDFC Bank in India deploy AI-powered chatbots for customer service and
robotic process automation to speed up back-office operations, enhancing service quality and
reducing costs (Infosys, 2025).
 Real-world 2025 case: PGP Glass introduced Microsoft 365 Copilot internally, improving
employee productivity by 30-40 minutes daily through automation of repetitive tasks;
Sandvik Coromant uses Microsoft Copilot for sales to refine transaction efficiency; Nykaa
leveraged GitHub Copilot to speed up development cycles, boosting developer productivity
by 20% (Microsoft Cloud Blog, 2025).
 In addition to healthcare, retail, and banking sectors leveraging AI, the chemical
industry giant BASF provides a compelling example of AI-driven transformation.
BASF, the world's largest chemical producer based in Germany, faced traditional
challenges such as optimizing chemical reactions to maximize yield and reduce
waste, ensuring quality control, managing energy consumption, and maintaining
safety in complex manufacturing environments.

 To overcome these challenges, BASF implemented advanced AI solutions across its

operations. Machine learning algorithms optimize chemical processes, improving
reaction efficiency and diminishing by-product waste. AI technologies support
predictive maintenance of critical equipment, reducing downtime and enhancing
machinery life. AI-powered sensors and analytics monitor product quality in real
time, assuring compliance with global standards. AI-driven energy management
systems optimize consumption and reduce emissions, aligning with BASF’s
sustainability goals (DigitalDefynd, 2024).
 Furthermore, BASF revolutionized its product development by employing AI
systems that analyze 150 years of chemical knowledge. This predictive intelligence
reduced research and development timelines from 18 months to just three weeks,
enabling faster innovation and breakthrough discoveries that traditional research
methods cannot achieve. The AI simulates molecular behavior, predicts material
properties, and identifies optimal reaction pathways, accelerating the discovery of
new molecules and materials.
 BASF’s AI-driven digital farming tools, such as the xarvio® Digital Farming
Solutions platform, provide tailored agronomic advice to farmers, integrating real-
time field data through IoT sensors to optimize crop production and resource usage.
This technology extension into customer-facing applications strengthens BASF’s
market position and contributes to sustainable agriculture practices worldwide.
 The company also fostered internal AI capabilities by developing AI expertise
through targeted hiring and global digital hubs ensuring AI applications align
closely with business goals. BASF’s strategic AI integration has resulted in higher
operational efficiency, sustainability achievements, faster innovation, and a
strengthened competitive edge in the chemical industry (Chief AI Officer, 2025;
[Link], 2025).

Part 3: Technology Creators and Vendors

Two leading technology vendors providing extensive AI offerings as core products include:
 IBM: IBM’s Watson platform offers a suite of AI tools covering natural language processing,
machine learning, and automation. IBM’s AI solutions serve sectors like finance, healthcare,
and manufacturing by enhancing fraud detection, optimizing supply chains, and powering
customer engagement systems. Watson’s adoption has helped IBM capture a significant share
of the enterprise AI market ($20+ billion in AI revenues reported) (IBM, 2024).
 Amazon Web Services (AWS): AWS offers a broad portfolio of AI and machine learning
services enabling businesses to build scalable AI applications rapidly. AWS supports real-time
analytics, personalized recommendations, automated workflows, and AI model training at
scale. Companies benefit from AWS’s flexible cloud infrastructure and AI toolkits to reduce
operational overhead and accelerate innovation (AWS, 2025).
These vendors complement client business objectives by addressing technical challenges, offering
pre-built AI solutions, and facilitating custom AI development and deployment.

Part 4: Relevance to Employer / Industry

In the semiconductor and chemical engineering industries where precision, efficiency, and innovation
are critical, AI offers transformative potential:
 Technology: AI-driven predictive maintenance detects machine faults early, significantly
reducing downtime and preserving costly equipment.
 Operations: Intelligent analytics optimize supply chain logistics, demand forecasting, and
inventory management, minimizing waste and improving delivery timelines.
 Customer Experience: AI tools analyze client data and industry trends to tailor product
development, enhancing satisfaction and competitive differentiation.
 Financial Impact: By reducing operational inefficiencies and enhancing throughput, AI
contributes to cost savings and revenue growth, crucial for semiconductor manufacturing
profitability.
These AI applications align well with industry digital transformation initiatives, driving innovation
and operational excellence.

Part 5: Learnings and Career Relevance

This course has yielded valuable insights with practical relevance to my career, including:
 The transformative impact of AI in automating workflows and enabling data-driven decision-
making, enhancing professional productivity.
 Comprehension of diverse AI technologies such as LLMs, agentic AI, and predictive
analytics, applicable across business functions.
