MEASUREMENTS
LESSON TARGET:
• Determine the basic fundamental quantities along
with their standard units.
• Appreciate the significance of mathematics in
science.
• Solve sample problems involving basic fundamental
quantities of measurement.
When we say measurement…
It is made up of two parts:
• The QUANTITY and the UNIT OF
MEASUREMENT
100 meter
Tools used to measure length:
Measures the units
Ruler centimeters, inches
and foot.
Measuring Tape
Measures the units
inch and foot.
Tools used to measure length:
Meter Stick Measures the units
centimeters and meters
Yard Stick Measures the units
yard, feet and inches
Tools used to measure mass:
Weighing scale
a device used to measure the weight or mass of
an object.
Are all units of measurement
always exact?
Why it is important for us to know how to
properly measure in laboratory
experiments?
Accuracy refers to how close a measured
value is to the actual or true vale
Precision is how close repeated sets of
measured values are to each other
HIGH ACCURACY and HIGH HIGH ACCURACY but LOW
PRECISION PRECISSION
LOW ACCURACY and LOW LOW ACCURACY but HIGH
PRECISION PRECISSION
SYSTEMS OF MEASUREMENT
Two major systems of measurement:
1. The SI or Sytemė International the adopted
metric system.
2. The English Metric System
Let’s measure the Length?
What is length?
What is width?
What is height?
Lets Practice!
Convert the following quantity to its specific unit of
measurements:
Meter Decimeter Centimeter Millimeter
(1m) (1/10) (1/100) (1/1,000)
3m
20 dm
25 m
500 dm
Let’s measure the Mass?
What is mass?
What is weight?
Using the measuring
tool you can then 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
determine the length
of the object by
looking at where the
other end lines up.
