Important Guidelines for Class X English Students

Dear Students,
Please read the following instructions carefully. These points will help you score better in your English
Board Examination.

READING SKILLS

• Learn how to attempt MCQs correctly.

• Each MCQ has only one correct answer — choose wisely.

• Do plenty of revision for reading passages.

WRITING SKILLS

Leave Application (3 marks)

Write 3–4 sentences(CONTENT ) including:

• Reason

• Purpose of writing/permission

• Polite conclusion

Factual Description

Write only one paragraph with a title.


Formal Letter

• Format with no content will get 0 marks.

• Format + meaningful content = 1 mark.

• You may begin with the receiver’s address.

• Write 3 paragraphs minimum.

• Salutation: Sir/Madam (not “Respected”).

• Closing: Yours sincerely / Yours truly.

• Use “Thank you”, NOT “Thanking you”.

• Do not write XYZ/ABC — use a proper name.

Article Writing

• Title + Byline are compulsory.

• Write 3 paragraphs (Intro, Body, Conclusion).

• No subheadings needed.

Practice

Complaint letters & permission letters will be revised in class.

GRAMMAR SKILLS

• Practice 20 sentences per grammar topic.

• In editing/omission:
If your correction is right but the error is wrong — you still get ½ mark.

• Practice rearranging long sentences.

LITERATURE

• Write to-the-point answers with key ideas.

• You will get ½ marks for expression even if partly correct.

• Long answers must include themes, comparisons, and summaries.

• Do not attempt out-of-syllabus questions.

• Word limit is flexible, but stick to it to save time.

• If you attempt more optional questions, your best answer will be counted.

FOR HIGH ACHIEVERS

• Understand the Question Paper pattern and weightage.

• Pay special attention to terms in the questions like:


Analyse, Infer, Elaborate, Justify, Critically Analyse, Explain.

• Learn all poetic devices used in the poems.

• Attempt daily tests.

• Practice reported speech and figures of speech.

• Revise MCB regularly.


STRATEGIES FOR EXAM

• Maintain regular attendance.

• Give priority to writing & literature.

• Practice competency-based questions.

• Time division during exam:

Reading – 55 mins

Writing – 45 mins

Grammar – 15 mins

Literature – 55 mins
