1. Computer Aid are a non profit organisation based in the UK that send old computers to
developing countries. The computers are donated from companies, individuals and
schools, they are then wiped, refurbished and sent abroad.
The company has also installed eClasses for 10 schools in Harare, Zimbabwe. An eClass
consists of 20 PCs, one teacher laptop, a projector, speakers and a printer. In addition,
they provide training and support for all the technology. Solar power is also used in areas
where there is limited electricity.
(a) Explain two advantages for students of this program. [4]

(b) Explain two advantages to the environment of this program. [4]

2. Every day, millions of mobile devices and computers are disposed of. Many of these end
up in landfill or incinerators.
Many of these devices still work and have been disposed of as they are not the latest
model or have become outdated. Some only have minor faulty parts and have been
disposed of as their owners did not know how to replace these.
Discuss how it is possible to reduce the number of computers and mobile phones that are
disposed of by landfill or incinerator each year. [6]

3. Rakesh makes heavy use of his phone for work. In particular, he uses it for email,
searching the Internet, talking on the phone and sometimes using Skype. The phone is
three years old and he is finding that it only lasts for around two hours when he is at work.
(a) Explain the most likely way for Rakesh to fix this problem. [2]

(b) Describe two ways that Rakesh could use to make his battery last longer. [4]
