Lesson outcomes
At the end of this class student should be able to
• Know laws of Mechanics
• System and control volume
• Reynolds Transport Theorem
MDB2013-Fluid Mechanics I
The bases of finite control volume analysis are some
fundamental laws of physics:
Careful consideration is required in defining the finite
region in space, the control volume, used in solving
the problem: Analysis of jet engine using control
volume approach
Then apply the laws to find the parameters at the control surface.
Reynolds Transport Theorem (RTT)
• An analytical tool to shift from describing the laws
governing fluid motion using the system(considering a
given mass of the fluid) concept to the control volume
concept (consider a given volume).
• RTT for a simple Fixed Control volume
Summary
A SYSTEM-Continuous mass of fluid, containing always the same
fluid particles which may move, flow and interact with the
surroundings.
CONTROL VOLUME (cv): Volume in space.
– It can deform with time
– It can move & rotate
– The mass of control volume can change with time
Reynolds Transport Theorem
• Bridging system concept and control volume concept
