Objective
The purpose of this project is to highlight the importance of the mother tongue in preserving
one’s identity, culture, and sense of belonging. Through the story “The Last Lesson” by
Alphonse Daudet, we understand how deeply language is tied to our emotions and heritage.
The story shows the pain of losing the right to speak one’s own language and reminds us
that the mother tongue is not just a means of communication but a symbol of pride and
freedom. This project aims to encourage appreciation and respect for our native languages,
emphasizing that they shape who we are and connect us to our roots and traditions.

Topic Selection
The topic “The Importance of the Mother Tongue” has been chosen because it highlights the vital role
language plays in shaping a person’s identity, culture, and emotions. This topic connects closely with Alphonse
Daudet’s short story “The Last Lesson,” which beautifully shows how people realize the true value of their
mother tongue only when they are about to lose it.
Reading & Research
For this project, I began by reading Alphonse Daudet’s short story “The Last Lesson” to
understand its message about the emotional and cultural importance of one’s mother
tongue. In addition to the story, I researched speeches, poems, books about the role of
the mother tongue in education, culture, and personal development
Listening & Speaking
As part of this project, I listened to interviews, speeches, and classroom discussions about
the significance of the mother tongue. I also participated in group conversations where
students shared their experiences and feelings about their native languages. Listening to
others’ perspectives made me realise that every language carries unique beauty, traditions,
and values that deserve respect and preservation.
Analysis & Reflection
After analysing “The Last Lesson” and the research findings, I understood that losing one’s
mother tongue means losing a vital part of one’s identity and culture. The story made me
reflect on how people often take their language for granted until it is threatened or taken
away. This reflection inspired me to value my own language more deeply and to encourage
others to speak and preserve theirs with pride.
Report Writing
In the final stage of the project, I organized all the collected information, discussions, and
reflections into a structured report. The report includes interviews of famous personalities,
famous poets, speeches of social fighters. It highlights the connection between Alphonse
Daudet’s “The Last Lesson” and the real-life importance of the mother tongue. Through this
report, I aim to raise awareness about the importance of respecting and preserving our
native languages as symbols of identity, emotion, and cultural heritage.
Rabindranath Tagore, a poet and philosopher, emphasized the importance of
tongue in learning. His
education, creativity, and the use of the mother
works, especially in Bengali, showed how language connects
people to their roots and inspires patriotism. On the other hand,
Rani Lakshmi bai, the brave Queen of Jhansi, became a
symbol of courage and resistance during India’s struggle for
independence. Listening to her story taught me that defending
one’s nation, culture, and language is a powerful act of love
and sacrifice.
As part of my speaking activity, I discussed Alphonse Daudet’s
story “The Last Lesson” with my classmates, class teacher, and
parents. During the classroom discussion, we shared our
thoughts about how the story shows the importance of the
mother tongue and how people often realize its value only
when it is lost. My teacher encouraged us to use our native
languages with pride and to understand their role in shaping
identity and culture.
When I talked about the story with my parents, they shared
their own experiences of learning and speaking their mother
tongue, which helped me see how language connects families
and keeps traditions alive. These discussions helped me build
confidence in expressing my ideas and deepened my
understanding of the emotional and cultural message of “The

Though different in their roles, shared the same message the
importance of valuing one’s identity, language, and freedom.
Their lives continue to inspire people to be proud of their
heritage and to use their voice fearlessly, just as Malala and the
characters in “The Last Lesson” remind us to protect our right
to learn and speak freely.
Analysis
Through this project, I analyzed how Alphonse Daudet’s “The
Last Lesson” powerfully conveys the emotional and cultural
importance of one’s mother tongue. The story shows how
language is deeply connected to identity, freedom, and national
pride. When the people of Alsace were forbidden to learn
French, they finally realized how precious their language was.
This message reflects the universal truth that we often take our
language and culture for granted until we are in danger of
losing them.
By studying this story, listening to speeches, and discussing the
topic with my classmates, teacher, and parents, I understood
that the mother tongue is not just a tool for communication—it
is a carrier of history, traditions, and emotions. The insights
from Malala Yousafzai’s speeches and the lives of figures like
Rabindranath Tagore and Rani Lakshmibai further strengthened
my understanding that education and language empower
individuals and nations. This analysis helped me see that
valuing and preserving the mother tongue is essential for
maintaining cultural identity and unity.
Conclusion
This project helped me realize that the mother tongue is the
heart of one’s identity. It connects people to their culture,
expresses their emotions, and strengthens their sense of
belonging. “The Last Lesson” teaches that losing one’s language
means losing a part of oneself, while real-life examples like
Malala Yousafzai remind us that education and expression in our
own language are forms of freedom.
Through reading, research, listening, and discussion, I learned to
appreciate the beauty and importance of my own mother tongue.
The project encouraged me to use it with pride, promote its
learning among others, and help preserve it for future
generations. In conclusion, the mother tongue is not only a means
of communication—it is a symbol of love, identity, and cultural
heritage that must be protected and celebrated.
Self reflection
Working on this project about “The Importance of the Mother Tongue”
based on “The Last Lesson” has been a meaningful and eye-opening
experience. I learned that language is not just a way to communicate—it
is a part of who we are. Through reading the story, doing research,
listening to speeches, and discussing with my classmates, teacher, and
parents, I gained a deeper understanding of how the mother tongue
connects us to our identity, culture, and emotions.
This project also helped me improve important skills such as reading
comprehension, speaking, and expressing my thoughts clearly. I became
more confident in sharing my ideas and more aware of the need to
preserve my native language. I now understand that every language holds
beauty and value, and that respecting one’s own language is a way of
respecting one’s roots.
Overall, this project inspired me to appreciate my mother tongue more
deeply and to encourage others to take pride in their language and
culture.
