Preparation of PMMA by solution polymerization

This method is used to solve the problems associated with the bulk
polymerization because the solvent is employed to lower the viscosity
of the reaction, thus help in the heat transfer.

This technique require only:

a. Monomer (soluble in solvent)
b. Initiator (soluble in solvent)
c. Solvent
Monomer dissolved in solvent, formed polymer stay dissolved.
Depending on the concentration of monomer the solution does not
increase in viscosity.

Solution polymerization is quite useful for the use as polymer fluid as it

is after polymerization (such as in certain adhesives and coating
processes), but need to remove solvent and collect polymer to take
polymer as solid form.
Solution polymerization is suitable when low molecular weight
polymers are desired (because of chain transfer possibility).

Advantages Disadvantages
• Product sometimes directly • Contamination with solvent.
usable.

• Solvent reduces viscosity, • Chain transfer to solvent

making process easier. occurs, leading to low
molecular weights.
• Thermal control is easier • Recycling solvent.
than bulk.

Procedure:

(solution polymerization of PMMA)

1. Place (2.5ml) methyl methacrylate monomer in dry test tube then

add (o.1gm) of benzoyl peroxide (initiator) then add (2.5ml) of
benzene.
2. Place the test tube in water bath at (80oC) for (15min) with
shaking, and then put it on the rack for (5min) at room
temperature.
3. Calculate the percentage of polymer:
% polymer = (weight of polymer / volume of monomer) *100
