Wheelchair Ramp Design Project Guide

The project involves designing and constructing a wheelchair ramp for a selected building, requiring measurements, design compliance with accessibility guidelines, material calculations, and cost estimation. Students must create a visual representation of their design and prepare a report and presentation detailing their process. The assessment criteria focus on communication and application of mathematics in real-life contexts, with specific levels of achievement outlined for each criterion.

MYP 5

Summative Project
Criteria C and D

Designing a Wheelchair Ramp

Project Overview:

The goal of this project is to design and construct a wheelchair ramp for a chosen building.

This project will involve several steps, including conducting measurements, creating a

design for the ramp, calculating the volume of materials needed, estimating the cost, and

creating a 3D model of the ramp. Note that if the design is overly simple then you will not be

able to achieve the highest levels.

Instructions:

1. Select a Building:
● Choose a building that requires a wheelchair ramp. Consider factors such as
accessibility and safety.
2. Measurements:
● Visit the selected building and take precise measurements of the area where
the ramp will be installed.
3. Design the Ramp:
● Based on the measurements taken, create a detailed design for the
wheelchair ramp. The design should comply with accessibility guidelines.
● Consider factors such as slope, landing size, handrail placement, and
material selection.
4. Calculate Volume of Materials:
● Determine the volume / quantity of materials required for construction.
5. Cost Estimation:
● Research the current market prices for the materials needed for construction.
● Calculate the total cost of materials based on the quantities determined in
step 4.

6. Create a visual representation of your project in the form of a 3D computer model, a

physical model constructed from (for example) cardboard, or a comprehensive set of
diagrams showing all aspects of the design (2D or 3D) .

7. Write a report which is clear, complete and concise, describing each step of the
process.
8. Presentation:
● Prepare a presentation to showcase your project in class.
● Include details such as the building selection process, design rationale,
material choices, cost breakdown, and the (2D or 3D) model.
● Be prepared to answer questions and provide explanations regarding your
project.

This project will provide you with valuable hands-on experience in design, construction, and

project management, as well as enhance your skills in measurement, calculation, and 3D

modeling. Ensure to adhere to safety guidelines throughout the project. Good luck!
