Summary Notes

1 Transformations in the Com-

plex Plane
Lets consider transformations T : C → C from the z- Exersice:
plane to the w-plane defined as T (z) = w. We will con- 1. Transform the points z,w and m using the trans-
sider the locus of points z in the z-plane and describes lation by z0 = 3 + i and reflecting the image in
the locus of points w in the w-plane. The following as the real axis:
some elementary transformations.
z = −1 + i
1. Translation: Let z0 = a + bi and z = x + w = −1 + 2i
yi. Translation of a complex number z by m = −2 + i
another complex number z0 is given by
2. The point z = x + yi moves on the circle |z| = 2.
T (z) = z + z0 = (x + a) + (y + b)i. Find and describe the locus of w = u + vi under
the following transformations:

2. Uniform Stretch from the Ori- (a) T : w = z −1+2i (i.e. w = T (z) = z −1+2i)
gin(Scaling): This transformation is (b) T : w = 3z
given by
(c) T : w = 21 z − i
T (z) = kz, k ∈ R+ . (d) T : w = i(1−z)
z+1

3. Let F : C −→ C be defined by F (a + bi) = a − bi.

3. Rotation about the Origin: This is Show that:
given by (a) F (xy) = F (x)F (y) for all x, y ∈ C.
T (z) = zeiθ = z(cos θ + i sin θ). (b) F (xx̄) = |x|2 .

If we represent z in polar form as z = (c) Using parts (a) and (b) show that (a2 +
|z|(cos α + sin α). Then we have that b2 )(c2 + d2 ) = (ac − bd)2 (ad + bc)2 .

T (z) = |z|(cos α + sin α)(cos θ + i sin θ)

= |z|[cos(α + θ) + i sin(α + θ)].

4. Reflection in the real axis: This is given

by
T (z) = z.

You can combine two or more of these transformations.

However, they must be computed orderly.

5. Reflection in the real axis and scaling:

T (z) = z1 = zz
1
z.
