DHT

THE ANDROGEN THAT MAKES

YOU A MAN
(dihydrotestosterone)

A few years ago, I thought testosterone was all that mattered.

Then I saw my bloodwork.

Testosterone looked decent. But I still felt off.

I was tired, unmotivated, flat in the gym, and sex drive was weak.

Turns out my DHT was low.

That one number explained a lot

Here’s the truth:

Testosterone is the blueprint. DHT is the builder.

You don’t feel your testosterone - You feel your DHT.

That ability to lock in, push through, and fuck like an animal?

That’s dihydrotestosterone — the real driver of masculine performance.

If your DHT is low:

Your libido will stall

Your mood will flatten
Your workouts won’t stick
Your face will soften
Your edge will vanish

I’ve seen guys with 900+ total testosterone who still feel dead inside,

because their DHT is suppressed.. so...

1. What is DHT?
DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone - a metabolite of testosterone.

Your body takes a portion of testosterone and converts it into DHT using an enzyme
called 5-alpha reductase (5AR).

But don’t mistake it for a weaker byproduct.

DHT is:

2.5–10x stronger at the androgen receptor (helps cells respond to male hormones
like testosterone and dihydrotestosterone)
Longer-lasting
More potent in tissue signaling
Less likely to aromatize to estrogen (hormone that controls female traits.)

DHT is what actually builds the masculine body and mind.

It’s responsible for:

1. Deep voice
2. Beard growth and facial masculinity
3. Sex drive and erectile function
4. Motivation and reward
5. Aggression and drive
6. Dense muscle fiber and neural explosiveness
7. Mood stability
8. Mental clarity
9. Skin health and scalp blood flow
10. Even prostate regulation when balanced
11. If testosterone is the raw material, DHT is the master architect.

I’ve seen guys with normal or even high testosterone who still feel flat.

They’re tired, unmotivated, foggy, and their body don’t respond to training the way
they should.

Almost always, it’s because their DHT is low - either because they’re not producing
enough testosterone to begin with, or they’re not converting it well.

What Happens When DHT Is Optimized (Why You’ll Want More of

It)

A) Your sex drive feels automatic

No mental buildup, no forcing it — your body just wants. Morning wood returns. Spontaneous
desire becomes normal again.

B) You start taking action without overthinking

You don’t wait to feel ready. DHT sharpens the brain’s “go” signal — decisions are faster,
motivation is cleaner, and hesitation fades.

C) Your physique changes faster - even without bulking

Muscle feels harder. Pumps look denser. You recover faster, even at maintenance calories.
DHT boosts the muscle-to-fat ratio without water retention.

D) You wake up clear-headed, dialed in, and calm-aggressive

That heavy mental fog is gone. You’re sharp, calm, grounded — but ready to attack what
matters.

E) Your jawline and face start to shift subtly over time

More edge. Less softness. DHT influences bone remodeling and skin thickness — even in
adulthood, especially if your 5AR was suppressed.

F) You feel “male” again - not just normal

More presence. More tension. More intensity when you speak, walk, and train. Not jittery —
just electric.

G) You become more responsive to dopamine

Music feels better. Goals feel exciting again. Porn becomes boring. Life reactivates. DHT
amplifies your brain’s reward circuitry, so purpose feels addictive.

H) Erections are stronger, more reliable, and more frequent

This isn’t just testosterone. DHT drives erectile quality via local nitric oxide signaling and CNS
activation.

I) You stop second-guessing everything

DHT increases prefrontal dominance and lowers limbic noise — which means more
conviction, less self-sabotage.

J) Your skin looks healthier, tighter, and more balanced

No flakiness, no dullness, no puffiness. DHT improves sebum balance and collagen turnover —
your face looks more alive, not bloated.

But the question is, What Kills DHT today??

2. What KILLS DHT

DHT doesn’t just “drop.”
It gets blocked or suppressed...

And it’s not just about how much DHT you make.
It’s also about how well your body can use it.

Even if your DHT is normal on paper, it won’t work right if your androgen receptors aren’t
responding.

Those receptors are like locks.

DHT is the key.

If the receptors are damaged, inflamed, or downregulated - the key stops working.
You feel tired. Your sex drive crashes. You lose strength. Your mood gets flat.

Even if your testosterone and DHT look “fine.”

1) Inflammation
– Destroys the enzyme (5AR) that makes DHT
– Triggers methylation, which turns off DHT production at the gene level
– Blocks thyroid and insulin, which also kills DHT

I had gut issues. Occasional joint pain. Low-grade inflammation. Never took it seriously until I
saw how it hit my hormones.

2) High prolactin
I never thought prolactin mattered. But even being slightly high can block 5AR and kill DHT.
Mine wasn’t crazy, just outside the optimal range. But that’s all it took.

3) Low thyroid
Thyroid hormones (especially T3) increase 5AR activity. My T3 wasn’t technically “low,” but it
was stuck at the bottom of the range. My body felt cold all the time. Resting heart rate was
low. Energy felt slow. That explained it.

4) Gut problems
There’s more DHT in the gut than in the blood. But gut inflammation, bad bacteria, or lack of
key nutrients block 5AR right in the colon. And yes — the gut can convert T to DHT if it’s
healthy.
5) Low carbs, low calories, low protein
I was doing intermittent fasting. Low carb most days. Barely eating enough. I felt disciplined,
but it was burning me out. My metabolism was slowing down. I wasn’t producing enough
insulin or IGF-1 to support DHT.

6) Too many plant compounds

Seed oils, soy, flax, reishi, saw palmetto, nuts — all of these either lower 5AR, raise estrogen,
or block androgens. I wasn’t eating a ton, but it added up.

7) Overtraining
I was lifting heavy 5–6x per week. No deloads. Doing cardio too. My sleep was good, but my
nervous system wasn’t recovering. One study showed DHT can crash in 24 hours after heavy
overtraining.

8) Alcohol, BPA, plastics

I wasn’t drinking much, but even occasional alcohol can shift testosterone into estradiol and
reduce DHT. And I had zero idea how many plastic containers I was using daily.

9) Poor sleep quality

I slept 8 hours, but it wasn’t deep sleep. No REM, no recovery. I felt groggy. That directly
lowered T and conversion to DHT.

10) Lack of nutrients

I wasn’t getting enough zinc, selenium, magnesium, B1, B3, B6, or choline. All of those are
critical for making NADPH — a key cofactor for the 5AR enzyme.

3. What Fixes It

I didn’t try to fix everything at once. I just started changing things one by one.

1) Creatine
10g per day. It’s simple, but real. DHT goes up by 56% in one study. Also good for the brain

2) Kestose
Weird Japanese prebiotic. Doubles 5AR in the colon.

3) DHEA cream
Topical only. Oral doesn't do much.

4) Zinc
From beef and oysters. You won't even need a supplement.

5) More carbs
150–200g per day. Focus gets better. Sleep improves.

6) Liver, eggs, and milk

Will fuel with vitamins you are deficient in.

7) Stopping all seed oils

Switch to butter, tallow, or coconut oil.

8) Fixing your gut

Add probiotics, PEA, and stop eating stuff that bloats you.

4. What I use now.

I test DHT 1–2x per year.

I aim for 80–100 ng/dL.

For me, that’s when I feel best.

If DHT drops, I check:

– Thyroid
– Prolactin
– Inflammation (CRP, ESR)
– Free T / SHBG
– Gut health
– My carb and calorie intake
– My sleep and overtraining
It’s simple once you know what to look for.
